The Chicago Cubs have signed former New York Mets pitching prospect Jace Beck to a minor league deal, according to Greg Huss (and confirmed by the transaction log).
The minor league signing falls into the “see what can happen in the farm system” bucket, as opposed to the “compete for a big league job” bucket or the “pure organizational depth” bucket. Although Beck is on the older side for a lower-level prospect, the move is pretty clearly a scouting and development play.
The Cubs have signed RHP Jace Beck to a minor league contract. The 25 year old Beck stands 6’9” and spent 2019-2025 in the Mets organization, making it up to High-A last year. He posted an ERA of 5.80 but struck out 13.6 batters per 9 innings.
— Greg Huss (@OutOfTheVines) December 4, 2025Beck, 25, was drafted out of high school by the Mets back in 2019, which was the perfect time to be a high school draft pick if you wanted your development to be terribly irregular. You may recall that there was no minor league season in 2020, and work with players was otherwise erratic from the late winter of that year pretty much until the summer of the following year. It means parts of three years being atypical for a developing young pitcher, and we’ve seen a fair number of these guys take some extra time/be old for their level in the years that followed.
That’s especially true when the injury bug strikes, as it appears to have for Beck. He threw 22.2 total innings in 2021, 20.1 in 2022, 31.1 in 2023, missed all of 2024, and threw 45.0 this past season. It’s hard to develop if you aren’t able to get in those innings of work, and it can throw the whole age/level thing out the window.
That doesn’t mean Beck definitely has a future at higher levels, mind you. It’s just a bit of an explanation on how he’s 25 but has yet to pitch above High-A.
So, then, what’s the allure on a guy who is already 25 and just posted a 5.80 ERA (and a 15.0% BB) at High-A? Well, as Greg’s post notes, this is a 6’9″ monster of a dude, who throws 95 mph and struck out batters at a 34.0% clip. Like I said, this is a scouting and development play. Maybe it doesn’t work out, but there’s obvious physical potential there, and maybe even some larger-than-usual room for development, given how little he’s been on the field. Get him in a new organization and see what can happen. Also: relievers can move quickly if things finally click.
