ALBANY, N.Y. — Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a bill into law on Thursday that aims to make lung cancer screening more affordable in New York State.
The new law requires health insurance policies to cover follow-up screenings or diagnostic services for people with lung cancer and eliminates cost-sharing for those services. It’s part of the state’s goals to make medical care more affordable, also banning co-pays for essential medications like insulin and inhalers.
“Your health is everything. And if your family can be spared the expense of having to come up with, maybe it’s a $50 copay, but it could literally be hundreds or thousands of dollars depending on the cost involved,” Gov. Hochul said.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in New York, with nearly 13,000 diagnoses and 7,000 deaths each year.
