Chicago will have the chance of snow just about every 36 hours for much of next week — and it all starts this weekend.
But that doesn’t mean another major snowstorm is coming. In fact, it’s just the opposite.
A blocking pattern is setting up in the atmosphere, which will keep a fairly consistent northwest-to-southeast moving jet stream about 20,000 feet up. Picture it like a moving conveyer belt locked in place. Multiple weak storm systems are going to develop and move along this conveyer belt over the next week or so.
These weaker systems are called Alberta Clippers. The name is derived from two elements: fast-moving ships in the 1800s called “Clippers,” and the fact that these areas of low pressure typically form in western Canada. They move fast, and don’t usually carry a lot of moisture to bring significant amounts of snow.
Still, accumulations are possible.
SNOW TIMING:
SUNDAY: The first Clipper arrives late Saturday night through Sunday morning. Roads may become snow covered early Sunday, so drive carefully. Only 1 or 2 inches is expected with this round, but there is a possibility some areas see up to 4 inches.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Lake effect snow will be possible; primarily across Cook and Lake Counties in Illinois, and possibly parts of Lake County, Indiana.
TUESDAY: Another quick shot of minor accumulations are possible late Monday night through Tuesday morning.
WEDNESDAY: We’ll have the chance of snow that may also mix with sleet and rain in the afternoon. There may be some big snow totals across Wisconsin from this one, so we’ll need to watch for any shifts in the storm track.
FRIDAY: Another round of minor accumulations possible.
SNOW TOTALS:
While Clippers don’t have a ton of moisture to produce big snow totals, the exact tracks can change quickly in the models because of their speed. We’ll watch for any shifts southward that could bring bigger travel impacts to Illinois.
In general, the favorable spots for higher snow totals will be in Illinois north of I-80. The Chicago area could see around 3-6 inches combined through the week, but Wisconsin should get much higher totals.
