Paving work on Perkins Street that began Thursday in Ukiah is significantly snarling traffic, and city of Ukiah officials are urging drivers to avoid that roadway as much as possible.
“We strongly encourage drivers to avoid Perkins Street and use alternate routes when possible,” city officials reported Thursday morning, describing the gateway street as “experiencing significant traffic delays due to active construction work. Crews are grinding and paving the roadway (Thursday and Friday), and congestion is especially heavy during peak traffic period.”
During Wednesday’s meeting of the Ukiah City Council, Public Works Director and City Engineer Tim Eriksen reported that construction on the Urban Core and Rehabilitation Project was “wrapping up,” with crews grinding Wednesday night in preparation for the paving on Perkins Street.
“Will be paving Thursday and Friday, and hopefully we will be finishing on Friday, but it’s likely that we will also be paving on Monday,” Eriksen said, describing the paving as making the street “looking like it’s done, but then we gotta raise iron. People always ask why we need to make holes in the newly paved street, but that’s always to lift the utilities back up to surface-grade.”
New traffic lights were also installed as part of the Urban Core project, and Eriksen noted that “we understand that people are a little frustrated with the flashing signals, so we’re working to get those back online as soon as possible.”
In a related note, Eriksen told the City Council that the project to replace a storm drain near the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds “is complete, and we’re actually taking some of the grindings from Perkins Street and putting them on some of the areas (at the fairgrounds) that we disrupted as part of that underground drainage project.”
