Of the top eight finalists, four dropped from their entry time: Chris Guiliano (3rd), Remi Fabiani (5th), Tolu Young (6th), and Kaii Winkler (7th)

Aside from top-seeded Andrej Barna (27), who set a championship record 21.58 in prelims, no finalist exceeds the age of 24.

27 of the top 40 swimmers from the prelims of the 50 free at the US Open this morning were 22 years old or younger. Kaii Winkler is seeded 7th for tonight’s final as the top-finishing teenager at 19, after his massive time drop from 22.31 to 21.93.

Other teenagers in the top 40 times from this morning include Quin Seider (tied 31st, 22.89), Garrett Gould (tied 31st, 22.89), and Leyton Roe (37th, 22.94).

26 of the top 40 (65%) finishers were ages 19-22. Of those 26, ages 20 and 22 each had eight top-40 times.

Jack Alexy, 22, who is at the forefront of this new wave of American sprinters, has proven to be a dominant force in domestic and international sprint freestyles and will have a chance to prove further that later tonight when he races as the 2nd seed in the 50 free final.

Right behind him for tonight’s final is Guiliano, 22, who put the world on notice last summer, winning the 100 free, and finishing 2nd in both the 50 and 200 frees at Olympic Trials in Indianapolis. He went on to be a key piece to the winning 400 free relay alongside Alexy, Dressel, and Armstrong in Paris.

Patrick Sammon, 21, had his breakout summer at the World Championships in Singapore, finishing 6th in the 100 free and blasting a 46.70 leg on the gold medal-winning 400 mixed free relay for the US. His 10th-place finish this morning was just outside of the championship final by six hundredths of a second.

Jonny Kulow, 21, is the 17th fastest performer in the world this year, and qualified in 4th for tonight’s final (21.90). With his 21.73 from the US National Championships this past summer. He was also a member of the bronze medal 400 free relay this summer in Singapore, where he anchored in 47.94. Three of those four legs (Alexy and Guiliano) will be competing in the final tonight (Sammon was 10th).

Brendan Whitfield, 21, finished 9th this morning, but has shown potential to be a forceful sprinter for the American teams; this morning, he lowered his lifetime best from 22.08 to 22.06, just narrowly missing the final.
