Smartwatches are everywhere these days, and while I’m not thrilled about the idea of a young child carrying a full phone, I can definitely get behind the idea of giving them a watch with a few essential phone features built in. It offers a nice middle ground that helps kids stay connected without opening the door to everything that comes with a smartphone. The TickTalk 5 Kids Smartwatch has just about everything you could hope for in a smartwatch and it’s geared specifically for kids.

About

TickTalk 5 is a next-generation smartwatch designed to keep kids connected in a safe, parent-controlled environment. It combines calling, messaging, and location tracking with tools that help families stay in touch throughout the day. Parents can manage contacts, view activity, set quiet times for school, and adjust settings from the companion app while kids enjoy an easy interface with helpful features like video calling, reminders, and step tracking. The watch uses 4G LTE for reliable communication, includes a clear touchscreen, and is built with durable, water-resistant materials suited for daily wear. TickTalk 5 offers a balanced approach to independence and supervision, giving kids freedom while keeping parents informed.

User Experience

The setup and onboarding process was pretty simple. I unboxed the watch, charged it, and went through the setup screens without much trouble. Activation got a little confusing because it kicks you out of the app, which makes everything feel less smooth. I’m also not a fan of needing a separate cellular plan for the watch. It would be so much easier if you could just attach it to an existing phone line since parents have to verify everything anyway. I’m running the companion app on an iPhone 16 Pro and haven’t had any issues so far.

In everyday use, the watch is easy for kids to pick up and understand. The icons are clear, the touchscreen reacts quickly, and the screen stays bright and readable whether you’re indoors or outside. The only downside is the size. It works fine, but it does feel a little big for smaller kids.

Communication features worked well during testing. My granddaughter figured out how to make calls almost instantly and had no problem calling me over and over again. My number was the only one saved, so I was the only person she could reach. She thought it was hilarious to keep calling, which got a little tiring, but the feature itself worked exactly how it should.

GPS performance was better than expected. The location updates loaded fast every time I checked, and the accuracy was spot-on. I never had to wait around for it to refresh or correct itself.

The parent app was also very smooth to use. The dashboard is clear, everything is easy to find, and changing settings is quick. I didn’t run into any syncing issues or strange behavior between the watch and the app.

Battery life is where things felt weaker. The watch drains a lot faster than I’d like. After around a day of not using it, the battery was already empty, and it dropped even quicker when it was being used. Compared to an adult smartwatch, it definitely doesn’t hold up as well.

One thing to keep in mind is the intended age range for this watch. We tested it with our four-year-old granddaughter, and while she’s pretty tech savvy, the main feature she caught onto right away was making phone calls. Using it purely for safety isn’t a bad idea, but the watch does feel a bit big on her wrist. I later saw that the recommended age range is six to twelve, so that’s something worth noting before buying.

Conclusion

The TickTalk 5 offers a solid mix of safety features, communication tools, and kid-friendly usability. It bridges the gap between giving a child full phone access and wanting them to stay connected in a controlled way. The watch performs well in most areas, especially with GPS accuracy, call quality, and the parent app. Its size and battery life hold it back a bit, and needing a separate cellular plan may be a drawback for some families. Still, for kids in the recommended age range, it delivers a reliable and approachable way to stay in touch.
