Championship, not revenge, is Windsor’s primary focus Saturday ...Saudi Arabia

Sport by : (GreeleyTribune) -

Windsor’s desire to win a fifth state football title in its school’s history isn’t about to take a backseat to the team’s hopes of gaining a measure of revenge Saturday.

That being said, redemption would be a fine cherry on the top if the Wizards were to finish their title run at Canvas Stadium on the Colorado State University campus.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, top-seeded Windsor (13-0) will play in its first state championship football game since winning the Class 3A title in 2015. After punching their ticket to the finals with a hard-fought, come-from-behind 21-14 semifinals win Saturday against fifth-seeded Holy Family, Isaiah Cronk and his teammates weren’t overly concerned with who the opponent would be this coming Saturday.

But, all things equal, Cronk said it is exciting and intriguing knowing they will match up with the Pomona program that defeated the Wizards in the quarterfinals a year ago.

“We’re all excited to get back (to the finals),” said Cronk, Windsor’s leading tackler with 121 tackles, including six tackles for loss. “(Pomona) is the team that we want to beat. It’s fun to see them again in the biggest game.”

Pomona is the second seed in the state tournament and it enters Saturday’s championship with a 12-1 record. Its only loss was against 4A’s top seed Dakota Ridge (13-0) — also a state finalist — in nonleague play.

All postseason, Windsor has been motivated by the desire to secure just one more game, 48 more minutes.

With each win, the Wizards’ tightly knit group affords itself another 48 minutes alongside each other.

Win or lose, Saturday’s game represents the final 48 minutes in which this particular Windsor squad will share the field with each other. It will also be the final 48 minutes in which the Wizards’ 22 seniors will don Windsor maroon and gold on the gridiron.

While recognizing Saturday’s game will be unlike any game this group has played in, one of the Wizards’ offensive leaders, senior running back Adrian Czyszczon, said he and his teammates will be careful not to let the magnitude of the moment get the best of them.

Shortly after the semifinals win against Holy Family, Czyszczon said he anticipates the preparation for, and the approach to, Saturday’s finals will closely resume that of Windsor’s previous 13 games.

“If we just play like we have all year — offense moving the ball, defense getting stops — there is no team in the state that can stop us,” said Czyszczon, who leads the Wizards’ dominant run game with 129.5 rushing yards per game and 22 touchdowns this fall.

“We’re all ready for our get-back at Pomona. We know what happened last year. We know how the game should have went. And, we’re excited to get another crack at them and have a different outcome this time.”
