Key Cal contributors junior Roman Jones and redshirt junior Matthew Chai are both absent for this week’s Minnesota Invite. The school declined to elaborate on the reasons for their absences, but a spokesperson said that the team is “hoping to get them back in action soon.”
Neither swimmer has raced since at least May. Jones’ last meet was the SMU Last Chance Invite in March, where he came up short of NCAA Championship qualification, while Chai last raced in May at the Speedo Grand Challenge meet in long course.
While the school didn’t share details about either swimmer’s absence, Jones was seen in a foot cast in Cal’s media day pictures.
Jones was the #12-ranked recruit in the high school class of 2023 and broke a National High School Record in the 100 short course meters free as a junior in high school. After swimming 43.17 in high school and not going a best time as a freshman at Cal, he managed to improve to a 42.96 in his best event at last year’s dual meet against Stanford. He also has bests of 19.38 in the 50 free, 46.24 in the 100 back, 46.22 in the 100 fly, and 53.82 in the 100 breast.
Chai came to Cal as the #6-ranked recruit in the class of 2022 with the fastest 500 free (4:15.09) of the group. He hasn’t dropped any time in Cal in any of his primary championship events (though he did swim an 8:45 in the 1000 free at his last meet of last season, a January dual against USC). Chai previously missed the entire 2023-2024 season.
Neither swimmer was on Cal’s ACC Championship team last season, though both were on the team’s Pac-12 Championship rosters as freshmen.
Both swimmers remain on Cal’s roster this season.
The Minnesota Invite kicks off Thursday morning.
