Swimming lane lines do more than divide the pool – they create structure, reduce wave turbulence, and keep swimmers in their designated space. And while high-quality lane lines – like those from Competitor Swim – are built to last 5-10 years, they still face constant wear from pool water, daily use, chemicals, and the sun.

The lifespan of your lane lines depends heavily on how you treat them, but if a problem comes up with your lane lines, it’s important to address it immediately, since faulty lane lines impact swimmer performance and safety. Here’s how to know when to repair or replace swimming lane lines:

When to Repair or Replace Your Swimming Lane Lines

If a Lane Float is Damaged… Individual floats can crack, fade, or warp due to chemicals in the water and general wear and tear. Even one damaged float can disrupt performance and throw off the look of the entire lane line.

The Fix: Repair No need to purchase a new lane. Replacing a single float is simple – especially if you purchased extra Competitor replacement parts. A quick swap keeps your lane looking clean and functioning properly.

If Your Lane Hardware is Worn or Broken… Rusty or broken hardware is a big safety concern – and disrupts the entire functionality of your lane lines. If the tensioner, springs, or other hardware aren’t working properly, the whole lane line suffers.

The Fix: Repair The attachment hardware can be replaced without replacing the full lane line. If you don’t have extra attachment hardware on hand, Competitor can provide all the individual parts you need to get your lane back into safe working conditions.

And If You Need a 15-Meter Resurfacing Marker… Swimmers must break the surface at the 15-meter mark after the start of the race and at every turn – which means it needs to be clearly visible from both sides of the pool. This is where resurfacing markers come in, acting as a visible tool built right into the lane line that indicates to the swimmer the 15-meter mark is approaching.

The Fix: Replace – a single disc segment.  You don’t need to replace the entire lane line. Instead, simply swap out the disc that sits at the 15-meter point for one in a contrasting color. Competitor offers individual markers, so this update stays quick, easy, and far less expensive than purchasing entirely new racing lanes.

What Else Can You Repair?

We offer several replacement parts for our racing lanes that you can order if something breaks, frays, or starts to show signs of wear, including:

Signs it’s Time to Replace Your Lane Lines

Even with great care, lane lines eventually reach the end of their lifespan. Full lane replacement is likely needed if you notice:

Disc discoloration or fading Disc brittleness or cracking Reduced ability to control waves Difficulty deploying or reeling the lane lines

Again, if only a few discs or components are worn, replacement parts may still be an option – and Competitor can help you determine what’s repairable.

Competitor LifeSpan+ Technology

Competitor Swim uses a unique LifeSpan+ formula in each of our lane lines, delivering a superior product that substantially increases the useful life of Competitor® discs even in harsh pool environments. That said, regular inspections and proper maintenance still go a long way in preserving your lane lines. We also recommend using our take-up reels for easy storage and installation, which helps protect the rope and hardware, extends the life of your lanes, and makes handling safer and easier for staff.
