Another notable starting pitcher is off the board, and although it’s not another guy at the top of the market, it *IS* another Toronto Blue Jays signing. I guess coming within a foot of winning the World Series makes you extra hungry.
Cody Ponce is coming back from Asia, and he’s doubled the record for pitchers coming back to MLB straight from Korea:
Right-hander Cody Ponce and the Toronto Blue Jays are finalizing a three-year, $30 million contract, pending physical, sources tell ESPN. The AL champs get the KBO MVP, who went 17-1 with a 1.89 ERA and struck out 252 in 180.2 innings. First on the agreement was @Ken_Rosenthal .
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) December 2, 2025Ponce, 31, struggled badly in his earlier attempts at breaking through in MLB, and was only OK in Japan before really exploding in Korea in 2025. Maybe there are red flags there, but (1) guys sometimes do figure things out against new/different competition, (2) folks who have evaluated Ponce’s stuff suggest that it actually did tick up this year, and (3) this contract is small enough that even if he winds up converted into a reliever, it still might have value.
That is all to say, I kinda love this risk for the Blue Jays. Maybe especially the Blue Jays, given that they already go six deep in their rotation even before adding Ponce (Dylan Cease, Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, Jose Berrios, Trey Yesavage, and Eric Lauer (who, by the way, came back from Korea himself this season and was quite good)). If any team can afford to take this swing and have it not work out, well, the Blue Jays are certainly in that group.
As for the broader market, it’s not great that a team that arguably didn’t need another starting pitcher just took one off the market. I would also say it’s probably not a great sign for Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer that the Blue Jays preferred to take this swing than to bring one of them back.
