ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monroe and Brighton high schools are making history by heading to their respective state football championships this weekend. It’s the first time for each program.
Monroe defeated Section Four’s Owego 48-7 on Saturday, while Brighton beat Union-Endicott 47-14 on Sunday.
“My goal was to be a championship-caliber team and to bring the first state championship to the city of Rochester, RCSD,” Monroe head coach Terrell Cunningham said. “We have an opportunity to do that next week.”
Brighton senior Matthew Heininger expressed excitement about the upcoming championship. “Means the world just to be able to get another week with my brothers,” Heininger said. “That’s been our motto.”
Monroe’s journey to the championship has been remarkable. In 2023, they won their first Section Five title since the 1970s but lost in the state semifinals.
“We understand what we gotta give up,” Monroe senior Anthony Omebe said. “We understand just what it takes to be this type of team.”
Brighton also faced challenges, winning its first-ever Section Five title in 2024 before also losing in the state semifinals.
“The past two years, we’ve been stopped short,” Brighton junior Zahmar Tookes said. “We’re there. We got one week of practice.”
Brighton head coach Stephen Lian expressed his pride in the team’s journey. “And to be able to say that, every second, every game of football, New York State allows us to play. We’re going to get to play together. As a coach, that’s all you can ever ask for,” Lian said. “I just can’t wait to get back to work with these guys and go play on Friday.”
Monroe senior Jermaine Montgomery emphasized the team’s dedication. “Means the world,” Montgomery said. “We manifest, we put to work in all season. Job not done yet.”
Brighton will face Section One’s Rye in the Class A final on Friday at 6 p.m., while Monroe will play Sleepy Hollow on Saturday at 3 p.m. for the Class B crown. Both games will take place at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse.
