NFC North Roundup: Bears Stay on Top, Lions in Trouble, Vikings Cooked ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Week 14 is here, and the Chicago Bears are sitting atop the NFC. Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers are within striking distance with a showdown between the two at Lambeau Field looming. Elsewhere, the Detroit Lions are trying to right the ship, and the Minnesota Vikings look like a sinking ship.

Here’s a look at the week that was in the NFC North.

Packers Down Lions on Thanksgiving

The Packers picked up one of their biggest victories of the season Thursday, beating the Lions 31-24 on the road to keep themselves firmly in the NFC playoff hunt. Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love delivered his best outing of the year, going 18 of 30 for 234 yards and a season-high four touchdowns with a 124.2 passer rating. The Cheeseheads leaned on clutch fourth-down execution and a breakout night from second-year receiver Dontayvion Wicks, who entered the game with just 213 yards on the season but erupted for six catches, 94 yards, and two scores.

Detroit played most of the night without its top offensive weapon. Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who came in fourth in the NFL in receiving yards, exited in the first quarter with an ankle injury and did not return. Fellow wideout Jameson Williams stepped up in his absence, turning in his best game as a pro with seven catches, 144 receiving yards, and a touchdown.

Lions quarterback Jared Goff threw for 256 yards and two scores. But Detroit’s offense sputtered early with only 10 total yards in the first quarter and later missed a critical fourth-and-3 chance in the fourth quarter when Goff couldn’t connect with a wide-open Williams. On the other side of the ball, Packers defensive end Micah Parsons added 2.5 sacks as Green Bay moved to stay alive in the NFC race, while Detroit missed an opportunity to tighten its grip on the division.

Lions’ Playoff Hopes Take Major Hit

Just about everything that could go wrong for the Lions in Week 13 did. Their Thanksgiving loss didn’t just sting — it all but knocked them out of NFC North contention and severely damaged their playoff hopes. Detroit’s division odds have plummeted to four percent, per The Athletic’s simulator, and even a perfect 5-0 finish would only raise that number to 57 percent.

Green Bay’s win created extra separation, and the rest of the conference didn’t do the Lions any favors either. The Bears, Seahawks, 49ers, Cowboys, Panthers, and Packers all gained ground or tightened the chase with wins of their own.

Now, with their margin for error evaporating, Detroit Head Coach Dan Campbell is keeping the message simple.

“Our margin for error is very small right now,” Campbell said. “We’ve got to find a way to win this next one in front of us… time’s running out.”

Detroit’s remaining schedule features two pivotal games: Dallas (Thursday) and Chicago (Week 18). The Cowboys sit directly below Detroit in the standings after big back-to-back wins against the Eagles and Chiefs, with one of the league’s lighter finishing schedules, while the Bears are two games ahead, setting up a potentially massive Week 18 matchup that could be a win-and-in for both teams.

Seahawks Blank Lifeless Vikings in 26-0 Beatdown

The Seahawks delivered one of the most lopsided performances of Week 13, shutting out a Vikings team that looked overwhelmed, undisciplined, and utterly out of answers in a 26-0 blowout.

Minnesota didn’t have quarterback J.J. McCarthy (concussion) under center, but the offensive collapse reached a new low anyway. The Vikings couldn’t run, couldn’t throw, and kept turning the ball over — extending their NFL lead in giveaways during a season defined by self-inflicted wounds.

Sunday brought another grim milestone: Minnesota was shut out for the first time since 2007, when a Brooks Bollinger-led team lost 34-0 to Green Bay. This one felt just as inevitable. Backup quarterback Max Brosmer threw four interceptions, including this one:

NFC North Standings Check

Extra Points

According to Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell, quarterback J.J. McCarthy is symptom-free and expected to clear the concussion protocol and return to action on Sunday. He won’t be throwing to Adam Thielen, who the Vikings released on Monday at the request of the veteran receiver. Thielen informed the Vinkings that he will be retiring at the end of the season and wants to sign with a team that will let him play a bigger role in the final weeks of his NFL career. Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons is third in overall votes for the Pro Bowl games with two weeks remaining in the voting. Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs ranks fifth.
