Roll Tidings, Tuscaloosa: A guide to Tuscaloosa’s winter activities ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

As the season of Roll Tidings approaches, Tuscaloosa has already begun to prepare for the holiday season, and while snow is unlikely to cover the Alabama grass, the winter spirit can still be found all around T-Town.

Every year, Holidays on the Plaza transforms downtown Tuscaloosa into a winter wonderland. From Nov. 24 to Jan. 1, festivity seekers can lace up a pair of ice skates and hit the outdoor ice rink in Government Plaza. Also in the Plaza is Tuscaloosa’s One Place Tinsel Trail, a holiday walkthrough with over 200 decorated Christmas trees sponsored by local businesses, organizations and individuals to help the Family Resource Center provide services and goods to families in need.

Another event for the Tuscaloosa holiday season is the Dickens Downtown event on Tuesday, Dec. 2. Hosted by Historic Northport Alabama, downtown Northport is decorated and prepared to celebrate a night of Victorian era festivities, including a horse and carriage entrance of the event’s cast, a tree lighting ceremony, carriage rides, caroling and much more.

The West Alabama Christmas Parade is on Dec. 8. The tree lighting will be at 5:30 p.m, with the parade following through downtown Tuscaloosa up to the steps of the Tuscaloosa Courthouse.

The Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park will host Pancakes with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 6. The event will host Civil War reenactments, arts and crafts, historical and modern food festivals, live music, educational workshops and other seasonal activities.

In addition to outdoor experiences, Tuscaloosa also hosts several musical and arts holiday performances. On Monday, Dec. 8, the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra is performing “Home for the Holidays,” featuring the Alabama Choir School, Alabama Choral Society and the Prentice Concert Chorale.

Theatre Tuscaloosa will perform  “Scrooge! The Musical” Dec. 11 through Dec. 21, bringing Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” to life.

New to the Tuscaloosa holiday repertoire is the “Merry and Bright Under the Stadium Lights ‘Holiday Experience’” in Bryant-Denny Stadium. On Dec. 2, ticket holders can enter Gate 1 of the Stadium and experience a holiday-themed tour of the Crimson Tide locker rooms, recruitment facility and LED light tunnel as well as a holiday-themed light show over the field. Tickets are sold out, but include the tours, show and hot chocolate.
