What to know to avoid a $200 fine during Chicago's winter overnight parking ban ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

With Chicago’s winter overnight parking ban going into effect early Monday morning, drivers will want to mind the parking enforcement signs on major streets or risk of facing at least $200 in fines.

The parking ban goes into effect at 3 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1 and is in effect daily through 7 a.m. until April 1.

Permanent signage advertising the ban is posted along the 107 miles of main streets it applies to throughout the city. The Department of Streets and Sanitation is also posting flyers on cars parked on the streets affected by the ban as a reminder before the restrictions start, the department said in a release.

Vehicles left parked in violation of the ban will be towed and their owner will face a minimum $150 towing fee, $60 ticket and a $25 daily storage fee.

The ban “helps ensure public safety each winter by allowing public transportation and emergency vehicles to move freely and reducing hazardous conditions for motorists, pedestrians, and other travelers,” said DSS Commissioner Cole Stallard. “Having this consistent rule for overnight parking allows snow removal crews to plan and execute their operations more effectively.”

Vehicles that are left during the ban “on these designated roadways obstruct the path of snowplows and prevent routes from being fully plowed and salted when it snows,” DSS said in the release.

Despite the ban’s purpose being rooted in snow removal, it applies regardless of snow levels.

If you think your vehicle may have been towed due to the ban, you can search for it here or call 311 for more information.

Vehicles in violation of the ban are towed to either Pound 2, located at 10301 South Doty Avenue) or Pound 6 (701 North Sacramento).
