A father of five was killed in a drive-by shooting while sitting inside his home in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, leaving a family devastated.
The shooting unfolded Saturday at approximately 5 a.m. near the intersection of 57th and May.
Family have since identified the victim as 45-year-old Antwan Washington.
Jennifer Lacey told NBC Chicago she wishes she could see the love of her life and the father to her children again.
“I’d tell him how much these kids love him and how much they miss him and the impact that he made on my life,” she cried. “The void he left in my heart is so big. I don’t think nobody else would be able to replace that.”
Her fiancé was getting ready for work on Saturday and was having his morning coffee on the couch when Chicago police said someone in a grey sedan drove past and fired shots into their apartment building.
“I can’t even think of a reason why anyone would do this to Antwan or even like come in and target our house just alone,” she said.
Lacey said she was sleeping along with their four boys. Their 11-year-old son woke up to find bullet holes in the apartment. That’s when Lacey went to the living room to grab her husband. She initially thought he was sleeping.
“I just tapped him trying to wake up him, I’m like, ‘babe, like wake up, get up,’ trying to alarm him to get up and that’s when his head went to the right and that’s when I seen that he was shot in the head,” she sobbed.
Chicago police found multiple shell casings nearby. Lacey said her family moved into the apartment building last December.
“We don’t do anything, we don’t bother anyone, we don’t have any type of drama whatsoever at all,” she said. “We just want to work and provide and take care of our kids.”
Lacey and Washington had been together for 12 years, building a life together, and hoping to grow their family.
“We were planning to go ahead finalize getting married this year, we were like even planning to have another child, we wanted to have a girl and it’s like now, I can’t do none of this,” she said.
Lacey said her fiancé was the provider and described him as sweet, hardworking, and loving.
“He was just a provider that’s all he wanted to do,” she said. “He would always do for everybody and put himself last.”
Chicago police are still investigating the motive and have not released any additional information about the case.
Lacey told NBC Chicago police are reviewing footage from a pod camera at the intersection. As she struggles to move forward having to raise their boys on her own, she knows that justice will be served.
So far, a fundraising page has raised more than $6,000 to help her family.
“It would help me to relocate due to how he was killed,” she said. “I really don’t feel safe like being in the city at all because we don’t know what the motive really is behind this.”
