Bears Rookie Colston Loveland Gets a Vote of Confidence From QB1 ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The arrow is pointing up for Chicago Bears rookie tight end Colston Loveland.

His numbers have picked up since the bye week:

7 games 32 targets (4.6 per game) 25 catches (3.6 per game) 335 receiving yards (47.9 per game) 13.4 yards per receptions 3 touchdowns 329 offensive snaps (68 percent snap share) 17-game pace: 78 targets, 61 receptions, 814 yards, 7 touchdowns

And if those numbers aren’t enough in terms of evidence, this quote from Bears quarterback Caleb Williams (via Marquee Sports Network) should do the trick:

“He’s a safe target. He’s a reliable target and his body language when he’s running routes is very similar to a wide receiver. It’s very smooth, it speaks to me very easily and I know when he’s breaking down, when he’s doing what. … Then he’s also tall and a large human. That makes it a little bit easier to sometimes just maybe toss it up to him or anything like that.”

This isn’t just lip service from Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, who has a 134.7 passer rating when targeting Colston Loveland this season. Williams is 28 of 37 (75.7%) for 378 yards and 3 touchdowns. He hasn’t thrown an interception when targeting Loveland this season, while 16 of his 28 completions have gone for first downs. That collection of numbers is among my favorite discoveries this season. I hope this duo keeps up their good work.

One of the things that has stood out about Colston Loveland’s game is his ability to present himself as a target for Willliams. That 6-foot-6-inch, 241-pound frame with 32 3/4-inch arms and 10-inch hands creates for an inviting target for his QB to throw to on any given down. Throw in Loveland’s run-after-the-catch ability, and you can see why the rookie tight end continues to get a growing role in this offense.

BLACK FRIDAY FOOTBALL PREVIEW | JAYLON JOHNSON AND KYLER GORDON ARE BACK!

It has been nice to see Colston Loveland get ito the swing of things. Moreover, it has been delightful to witness how Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson has finally come around to deploying his tight ends. I don’t think he was intentionally not using them early in the season. Instead, I feel as if what is happening with the tight ends now is what happened with the running game with the coach and players needing to feel each other out before fully diving into this thing.

How are Colston Loveland and the other Bears rookies performing?

Now that we’ve gotten our Colston Loveland update out of the way, let’s take a moment to catch up with the other Bears rookies:

Luther Burden III — Burden got 4 touches (3 catches, 46 yards; 1 rush, 15 yards) in the team’s Week 12 win against the Steelers. It feels worth noting here that Burden has gotten at least 5 targets in back-to-back games. Perhaps he will get more in the coming weeks. Ozzy Trapilo — Pro Football Focus had the rookie offensive lineman as the highest-graded Bears player in their initial grades after Week 12. Even though Theo Benedet had a healthy week of practice, Trapilo could still be in line to start again on Black Friday. Luke Newman — The rookie lineman played a chunk of snaps in place of right guard Jonah Jackson. Unfortunately, the Michigan State product suffered a foot injury that landed him on injured reserve. Newman will be out for at least the next four games. Kyle Monangai — I wonder if we’re witnessing a changing of the guard at running back. Monangai got more touches and saw more snaps than D’Andre Swift in Week 12. Monangai finished the game with 12 carries, 48 rushing yards, and a touchdown. The running back situation is likely to be one where Chicago’s coaching staff rides the hot hand — and that would be fine by me.

The Bears rookie class has been solid to this point, so I hope the good times can keep rolling in Week 13.
