Siena Santos, a Speedo Sectionals finalist, will head across the country next year after announcing her verbal commitment to swim for Virginia Tech beginning in the fall of 2026.
“I am extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue to swim & study at Virginia Tech! I would like to thank my family, friends and coaches at Orinda Aquatics for guiding and supporting me through this process and helping me get to where I am today. And a special shout out to coach Mason, coach Sergio and the whole VT coaching staff for giving me this amazing opportunity. Go Hokies!!”
The California native is currently a senior at Carondelet High School, where she has been a member of the varsity swim team since her freshman year. Santos also trains year-round with Orinda Aquatics in Moraga and specializes primarily in free, fly and IM.
Santos turned in a series of strong performances at the 2024 PLS Senior Open last November, getting her season off to a strong start early on. She placed 8th in the 100 fly (56.74) after clocking a season-best time of 56.61 during prelims and placed 10th in the 200 fly (2:09.92) after posting a lifetime best time of 2:07.61 in the morning heats. Santos also finished 21st in the 400 IM (4:35.42 – PB) and 30th in the 100 back (1:00.87) and set season-best times in both the 200 IM (2:09.71) and the 100 free (54.29).
Towards the end of the season, Santos raced at the CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) North Coast Championship, where she posted three new personal best times. She placed 5th in the 200 IM (2:06.09) and 6th in the 100 fly (57.14) after posting lifetime bests during prelims in both events: she threw down times of 2:04.35 and 55.62, respectively. Santos also logged a personal best time of 52.40 in the 100 free as the leadoff on the 400 free relay.
She went on to compete at the CIF State Championship a week later, where she finished 23rd in the 200 IM (2:05.21). Santos also helped her team to a 9th-place finish in the 400 free relay, 13th-place finish in the 200 medley relay and 18th-place finish in the 200 free relay.
At the 2025 Speedo Sectionals in Novato (LCM), Santos earned a second swim in three events and logged four new best times. She placed 15th in the 200 IM (2:27.95 – PB), 17th in the 100 back (1:06.36 – PB), 20th in the 100 fly (1:04.73 – PB), 30th in the 200 back (2:31.47) and 45th in the 100 free (1:00.82 – PB).

The Hokies placed 9th out of 15 teams at the 2025 ACCs before sending three swimmers to compete at the NCAA Division I Women’s Championships. To earn a second swim at last season’s conference championships, it took times of 1:58.69/4:16.30 in the 200/400 IM, 52.69/1:58.69 in the 100/200 fly and 48.72 in the 100 free, putting Santos outside the cutoff in each of her top events. bu
On the team itself, Santos would have ranked 3rd in the 200 fly and 400 IM, 4th in the 100 fly and 200 IM and 8th in the 100 free last season. While it remains to be seen how the roster will shake out after the current season, Santos is poised to be a strong contributor for the Hokies when she arrives next fall.
Santos comes from a family of swimmers; she is the daughter of Olympian Roque Santos, who placed 12th in the men’s 200 breast at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, and Debbie Santos, who swam for the University of Arizona and now coaches a masters team in California.
Since 2018, the Virginia Tech swimming and diving teams have been headed by Director and Head Coach Sergio Lopez Miro, a two-time Olympian and former Spanish national team swimmer originally from Barcelona. Lopez Miro also has a long history with Roque Santos, as the pair trained together for multiple years leading up to the Barcelona Games and reunited for a podcast episode as recently as 2020.
Currently set to join Santos in Blacksburg next fall are Grace Marsaa, Alexandra Hrnčárová, Lydia Cameron, Eliza Osada, Bianca Nannucci and Ally Vernon, who should all make for strong training partners over the next four years.
