Two members of the US National Guard have been shot in Washington DC.
The military personnel were fired at a block from the White House.
One suspect has been arrested while the immediate has been secured.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted on X: “Please join me in praying for the two National Guardsmen who were just shot moments ago in Washington D.C.”
The press secretary said the White House was in lockdown.
Donald Trump was not in the Washington building at the time, having travelled to Florida for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said the shooting took place one block from the White House on Wednesday and a suspect had been taken into custody.
In a post on social media, the force said: “MPD is on the scene of a shooting at 17th and I Street, NW.
“Please avoid the area.”
Later adding: “The scene is secured. One suspect is in custody.”
