Should the Cubs Be Pursuing a Sandy Alcantara Trade? ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

There was a time earlier in the season when Sandy Alcantara trade rumors dramatically outpaced the rumors on any other controllable starting pitcher who might be available at the Trade Deadline. The rationale was obvious, with Alcantara making real money and coming back from Tommy John surgery, it only made sense that the Marlins would be motivated to move him for value.

But then Alcantara really struggled in the first half, it became clear that only buy-low offers would be available, and the rumor mill shifted over to Alcantara’s teammate Edward Cabrera, as well as MacKenzie Gore and Joe Ryan. None of the four were actually traded, of course.

Then something happened that should have Alcantara right back on the radar this offseason: he was really, really good over his final eight starts (2.68 ERA, 53.2 IP, 3.62 FIP, 50.0% GB, 24.9% K, 4.8% BB). Normally you wouldn’t cherrypick like that, but when a guy is coming back from surgery, there’s at least an argument for signal there as he gets himself physically and mechanically right.

All of that is to say, yeah, I could understand why Bruce Levine would urge the Cubs to look at Sandy Alcantara in trade:

“Putting (Sandy Alcántara) and Horton as your 1 and 2 and having the three veterans backing that up, to me, that’s a championship-caliber rotation.”@MLBBruceLevine wants the Cubs to trade for Sandy Alcántara this offseason ?

Maybe that’s just TV talk, but sometimes the connected reporters will suggest a move the Cubs should look at because they’ve already heard that it’s a possibility. It’s not like it would be the first time the Cubs have been connected to Alcantara, and we also know the Cubs and Marlins had extensive talks on a pitcher trade last offseason (Jesus Luzardo). It wouldn’t be shocking to learn there’s some level of mutual interest here, and Alcantara would certainly offer the Cubs a different look in the rotation.

The 30-year-old righty is signed for $17.3 million next season, and then has a team option for 2027 at $21 million ($2 million buyout). I’m sure the Cubs would love that deal, but obviously you’d have to weigh it against the prospect cost in trade, which would almost certainly be substantial.

Either way, it’d be good for the Cubs’ efforts overall to pull their preferred starter if Alcantara were fully available on the market. The reality is, there are a LOT of guys available this offseason that I’d be perfectly content with the Cubs landing, and I’d be happy if Alcantara is in that group.

Of course, there’s an issue with trying to acquire Alcantara, even if the Marlins otherwise wanted to trade him. As Michael discussed this week, the Marlins could be facing yet another grievance for failing to spend sufficiently on payroll after receiving substantial revenue-sharing funds. Trading away Sandy Alcantara’s contract, therefore, could only serve to exacerbate the issue – ahead of a contentious CBA fight, too.

Of course, the flip side there is that the Marlins may still prefer to move Alcantara for value if they can, and then either deal with the consequences, or just go out and sign some other free agents to replace the salary. Heck, if they sign the right guys, they might actually, you know, improve their roster.
