ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The 8th annual News10NBC Toys for Tots Holiday Drive is underway, aiming to ensure that every child has a toy to open during the holiday season.
This year’s goal is to raise 125,000 toys, which would surpass last year’s record of nearly 103,000 toys. So, how has the drive been going? Alexis Hogle, a coordinator for Toys for Tots, says they’ve collected 30,000 toys, books, and other items so far.
The toys go from the collection boxes across the region to a 6,000-square-foot warehouse for sorting. On Wednesday, agencies are coming by to pick up some toys they requested to give to children.
“There’s a lot more than most people think, between getting the boxes out, getting them picked up, emptying them out when calls come in for them being filled,” Hogle said. “There’s also sorting everything, counting everything, and then packaging these requests.”

Hogle said they’re most in need of toys for children ages 9 and up.
“We’re looking for STEM kits, arts and crafts, the self-care stuff. Anything that you think a 9 to 15-year-old is going to like, that’s the age range that we’re having the biggest headache getting in,” she said.
Across the region, there are 860 drop-off sites, including all area Bill Grays and Tom Whals restaurants. People can donate toys now through Dec. 14. You can see a list of drop-off sites here or donate money online here.
Toys for Tots began in 1947. The United States Marine Corps Reserve manages the drive and distributes the toys to families. New this year, the Macedon and Rochester campaigns have merged, meaning the drive now includes eight counties.
