King for the Cubs, Actually Productive Outs, Cardinals Selloff, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

OK. Day before Thanksgiving. This is important. I must summon all of my willpower to eat VERY LIGHT today, thereby justifying the monstrous damage I plan to do tomorrow. The problem with putting me in charge of Thanksgiving Day food is that I will choose anything and everything that I personally want to eat. Which means there are like 15 different things I want to eat tomorrow, and I will do so.

The Athletic’s Andy McCullough put together a list of mostly-serious, semi-cheeky Black Friday deals for each of MLB’s 30 clubs. For the Cubs, it’s Michael King: “The Cubs may well get out-bid for the services of King by a team more willing to pay top dollar for a talented pitcher who has not yet proved he can handle the rigor of a full season as a starter. But King has an elevated ceiling, perhaps the highest of any pitcher on the market, and likely won’t require a long-term deal.” The injury risks with King are not insubstantial. It’s true for every pitcher, but King has had multiple elbow injuries in his career, plus a nerve issue in his shoulder this past season that is particularly concerning. But the upside is what he showed for parts of 2023-25: a sub-3 starting pitcher who doesn’t walk guys and strikes a lot of ’em out. King turns 31 in May and doesn’t throw especially hard, so there’s some risk at that level, too, that if there is a fall off in velocity, it might ding his performance. Still, I am glad the Cubs are reportedly interested, and, when considering all the context (including the expected price tag), King is probably my second favorite target for the Cubs, behind only Tatsuya Imai. It should be noted that the Cubs don’t love signing players attached to Qualifying Offers, but, with the extra pick coming for Kyle Tucker, the hit would sting a little less, since they effectively have two second-round-ish picks as is. Moreover, the extra “cost” for the Cubs to sign King is less than for the luxury-tax-paying teams this time around, so they may have a slight relative edge there in what they can offer. (The same applies for other qualified free agents, by the way, like Dylan Cease or Ranger Suarez or Framber Valdez.) Fun and interesting read at FanGraphs on the nature of productive outs, and an analysis on which players actually did a good job this year in creating value by way of outs. The only Cub to show up on either the most productive or least productive list was Pete Crow-Armstrong, who was one of the most productive out-doers this year. Yes, he gave back a good bit of value with strikeouts in moments where contact would’ve helped, but his ability to beat out double-plays, to reach on errors, and – apparently – mostly put the ball in play to score runners was pretty substantial. I love to see it, because it’s not necessarily something that PCA gets a lot of credit for. I can’t vouch for the complex formula, mind you, but Ben Clemens is pretty smart, and according to his calculations, PCA’s value created by way of productive outs was nearly 8 runs. If 10 runs is a win, that’s almost a whole extra win that he created for the Cubs by way of doing good things even when he didn’t quite do the GOODEST thing (you know, like, getting a hit) in big spots. Also, not that it’s a perfect check against this method, but my first question was: Where does Nico Hoerner land? If you’re talking about a likelihood of productive outs, it sure seems like he would rate well. Indeed he does, in the top-50-ish, and second on the Cubs. Most Cubs regulars appear to be slightly above neutral, for what that’s worth, and only Seiya Suzuki is slightly below. Loading up on Cubs legends:

— MLB Trade Rumors (@mlbtraderumors) November 26, 2025 Speaking of Cubs legends, Kenta Maeda is heading back to Japan, signing with the Rakuten Eagles. The 37-year-old righty split his final stateside season between the Cubs and Yankees’ Triple-A clubs. He finishes his MLB run having thrown 986.2 innings across 9 seasons with the Dodgers, Twins, and Tigers, with a 4.20 ERA, 3.90 FIP, and 15.0 WAR. New Cardinals baseball chief Chaim Bloom didn’t waste any time starting/continuing the organizational sell-off, sending Sonny Gray (and $20 million) to the Red Sox for young pitchers Richard Fitts and Brandon Clarke. He is pleased about the move (Nightengale): “Richard Fitts has already begun his big league career, and with his power stuff and willingness to attack the strike zone, he has the ability to start games at the highest level for many years. Brandon Clarke is an exciting left-handed prospect whose ceiling rivals that of any pitcher in the minor leagues. Both have the potential to be part of our growing core for a long time, and we are happy to welcome them to the Cardinals.” I don’t know that I’d want to try to outfox Craig Breslow when it comes to picking up young pitchers he was willing to trade away, but Bloom has extra familiarity with Fitts, at least, having come over from Boston to the Cardinals a couple years ago. Officially, I still hate this deal – meaning, I hate that the Cardinals were able to get very real value for a single year of Gray (despite his huge salary and no-trade clause). More to come for the Cardinals:

MLB notes: After trading Sonny Gray, Cardinals focused on moving Nolan Arenado, and at least one, if not two, of their left-handed hitters, multiple team sources said. What that means for Donovan, Nootbaar, Burleson, Gorman, plus more on Arenado's market. t.co/MgWVQQY3vK
