The Chicago Bulls’ NBA Cup journey is about to come to an end early … again.
Ahead of this week’s close to the tournament group stage, the NBA released an update on both the clinching and elimination scenarios in all six groups. While the Bulls’ Group C is far from decided, the chances of Billy Donovan’s crew advancing have all but vanished. The blowout loss to the Miami Heat last Friday moved Chicago to 1-2 and dropped their point differential to a -42, which is the second-worst in the Eastern Conference.
There are now three possible situations that can play out over the next few days that will officially eliminate the Bulls from advancing to the knockout round. The first scenario that can end the Bulls’ run is if Atlanta beats the Wizards on Tuesday night. Sitting at 1-15 on the year, it would sure be a shock if Washington kept the Bulls alive. The other two scenarios are wins for Orlando + Detroit or New York + Miami. The Magic will play the 76ers on Tuesday, while the Pistons will take on the Celtics. As for the Knicks, they are on the road in Charlotte, while the Heat will host the banged-up Bucks
Assuming one of these scenarios comes to fruition, this means the Bulls’ final NBA Cup game on Friday against the Hornets will hold no extra meaning. This would also mark the third straight season the Bulls have failed to make it into the second stage of the in-season tournament. The tournament started during the 2023-24 season, seeing both the Lakers and Bucks take home the trophy. Things looked promising after the team’s first NBA Cup game, where they beat the New York Knicks by double digits. Losses of 16+ to the Bucks and Heat, however, have halted their momentum both in the competition, let alone in the season as a whole.
Indeed, this recent version of the Bulls looks as if they would stand little chance in the higher-stakes games. They have gone 3-7 in their last ten games, recording the NBA’s sixth-worst net rating over this stretch. Their most recent loss came to a Pelicans team that entered the night 2-15 and was averaging the fewest points per game. Nevertheless, they went on to score a season-high 143 points in regulation and shoot upwards of 50 percent.
So, again, I think it’s safe to say the Bulls have not earned an invite to the league’s third-annual NBA Cup party.
I encourage you to check out the full NBA Cup scenarios heading into this week here.
