A horse in Larimer County has tested positive for equine herpes virus, a highly contagious and sometimes fatal virus.
The Colorado State Veterinarian’s Office announced Friday in a release that the horse tested positive for the virus (EHV-1) on Thursday, after spiking a mild fever upon its return to Larimer County from a barrel racing and rodeo event in Texas.
That horse, and others that reside on the same premises, have been quarantined, the release states.
This is the only confirmed case of EHV-1 within Colorado, according to the state website.
The Colorado State Veterinarian’s Office has been actively monitoring an outbreak of the EHV-1, which can lead to a neurological disease, in both Texas and Oklahoma, the release states. That outbreak was connected to horses that participated in or were around barrel racing and rodeo events in the two states over the past several weeks.
The Colorado State Veterinarian’s Office was notified of horses that had traveled to Colorado from those events, and officials contacted the owners of the exposed horses to place the animals under hold orders and to provide instructions on how to monitor.
One of those horses had a mild fever and then tested positive for EHV-1; that horse is now showing neurological signs, according to the release.
“This outbreak serves as a reminder of the potential disease risks associated with large commingling equine events,” said Colorado State Veterinarian Dr. Maggie Baldwin said in a release. “ It highlights the need for all horse owners to practice strong biosecurity and report any concerning signs to their veterinarian quickly.”
The State Veterinarian’s Office asks anyone with horses that traveled to Texas, Oklahoma or to other equine events where exposure may have occurred to contact the state office for guidance. Residents also are asked to report any horses with signs of acute neurological disease to the office.
