In the Facebook post, the business said the damage from the fire has been proven to be “far too extensive,” and amongst other concerns, it would be “impossible to restart the business in a timely and economically sensible manner.”
Brownstein’s has served the community for nearly 40 years, and was often ranked the top deli in the Rochester area on Yelp.
In 2022, owner Irwin Brown closed the retail part of the store, but continued to make bagels for wholesale. The business delivered to schools, hospitals, houses of worship, and events.
Although the Monroe Avenue location will not reopen, most of the bakers will be moving on to a new business called Gianni’s.
The new business, which will be in Greece, will initially serve the wholesale market, but is exploring other options for future retail opportunities.
Even though Brown has retired, he will serve as an advisor to the new business.
