Being reliable leads former ASU walk-on Derek Eusebio to contribute in title push ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

As a walk-on over the previous two seasons, Arizona State wide receiver Derek Eusebio prided himself on being reliable every chance he’s received.

He is not the biggest athlete on the team at 5-foot-9, nor is he the fastest in the program. Being detailed and consistent were ways he could bring an edge, leading to a scholarship, a larger role and even an NIL deal in 2025.

Eusebio caught a career-high six passes on Saturday, scoring a touchdown on a screen pass from quarterback Jeff Sims in a 25-23 win over West Virginia to keep ASU in the Big 12 title hunt.

“I’m always in the right spot,” Eusebio told Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta is key to his success.

“I mean, I pride myself on just showing a lot of effort and just being in the right place at the right time, like trying not to make mistakes. Because like, as a walk-on, you don’t really get many chances. So like, whenever you get your chance, you really have to show what you got. You can’t really afford to make any mistakes. So that’s really what I pride myself on and especially catching the ball. I believe I got good hands.”

Eusebio received looks early this season but has been a more consistent presence on offense with at least 35 snaps in five of the last six games. He is third on the team in receptions among wide receivers with 15 this season.

Jordyn Tyson blows all other receivers on the team away with 57, as ASU has not had a true No. 2 option among wideouts — tight end Chamon Metayer is second in catches with 35. Tyson having missed the last three games with a hamstring injury has increased the need for others to make plays.

ASU is very banged up on offense, with Tyson working his way back while quarterback Sam Leavitt, running back Kyson Brown and offensive lineman Ben Coleman out for the year.

Eusebio has built rapport with Sims from their time working with the 2s on the practice field, adding a level of gratification for the receiver to see Sims keep the offense afloat.

“I’ve been working with him for like the last two years since he got here,” Eusebio said. “He’s kind of responsible for me being put on a scholarship too, just because of what we did in practice. So, I love seeing him ball, for sure.”

Eusebio admitted that with a new offense compared to the start of the year, the group is working through some inconsistencies and is looking to put a complete game together. ASU has two games left in the regular season, starting with Saturday against Colorado. If ASU can take down CU and then Arizona in the Territorial Cup, they would have an outside chance to make the Big 12 title game.

It is a huge opportunity for a team with this many key injuries, and Eusebio isn’t taking for granted his role in that.

“It’s a lot to be grateful for just because I understand where I’ve been,” he said. “Extremely blessed to be able to just contribute to the team any way possible, just to help any way to win.”

He is also Tyson’s roommate and gave Bickley & Marotta the latest status report on ASU’s top receiver. Tyson is officially questionable for Saturday against his former team.

“He hasn’t been practicing the last four weeks, so it’ll be hard for him to jump in there like that. But I understand he’s trying to go, he’s trying to,” Eusebio said. “His competitiveness, he’s playing his old school, so he doesn’t want to sit out and rest and watch us play out there for him. He’s working his hardest just to get back out there.”
