Rush hour car crash leads to collision with Metra train in Chicago ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Chicago Metra riders on the city’s southwest side faced extensive delays during the Thursday morning rush hour commute after a train collided with car on the tracks at 87th and Pulaski near Hometown.

Two teenaged sisters were on their way to school when their car was involved in a crash with another vehicle, the teens’ father told NBC Chicago. That collision pushed their car onto the tracks, where it was then struck by train #808.

“They’re all banged up right now so they’re at the hospital being checked out,” the girls’ father, Paul Smith, told NBC Chicago. “They’re in shock.” Smith added his daughters got out of their vehicle before it was struck by the train, which happened at about 8:30 a.m.

Photos and video from the scene show a mangled silver car, with major damage to the trunk and car’s backside.

“Once the gate guards came down, everybody started getting out of their cars, because they knew it wasn’t enough time,” Smith said. “They knew that the car was going to be impacted by the train.”

Metra passengers experienced delays of up to 80 minutes following the collision, leading to major traffic backups.

It’s unclear if the driver of the other vehicle will be ticketed or charged.
