This One Word Best Describes the Ben Johnson Bears ...Middle East

All you need is one word to accurately describe the first 10 games of the Ben Johnson era as the Chicago Bears’ head coach.

And we’ll let Bears wide receiver DJ Moore say it:

The 2025 Chicago Bears are “Resilient” Under Ben Johnson

“Resilient,” Moore said to Bears play-by-play voice Jeff Joniak on Marquee Sports Network. “We’re always in the fight and never looking back at the negatives that went on in the game. We’ve just gotta finish them.”

I could not have picked a better word. It fits Ben Johnson’s 2025 Bears so well. This group has had to overcome its share of hurdles and adversity this season. Think about how much heavy lifting this team has done in all facets of the game. An offense learning a new scheme and overarching philosophy with a returning second-year quarterback and an offensive line that began the year with three new starters. A defense with a new coordinator who is mixing and matching new and old pieces while ushering in a new era of defensive game-planning that starkly different than his predecessor. I could go on. But for the sake of time, I won’t.

With that being said, I hope that we’ll be able to use a different word to describe the Ben Johnson-led Bears by the end of the year — FINISHERS!

Don’t get me wrong. I know (and love!) that this team has gone from one that will go to great lengthts to find new and maddening ways to lose games to a squad that snatches victory from the jaws of defeat. There is no doubt that the five one-score games the Bears have won this year are games that last year’s team would have lost.

However, a better team would have been able to extend leads against the Vikings or hold off comeback attempts like the one orchestrated by Joe Flacco and the Bengals. A better team would not have needed to come from a 10-point hole to defeat the New York Giants. These Bears are good. But they can be better. I know that. You know it, too. So does Ben Johnson.

I shared this quote from Bears safety Kevin Byard III in this morning’s BN Bears Bullets, but I find it to be worth sharing again:

“These aren’t the same old Bears. With this culture, we’ve been battle-tested. And I’m never going to apologize for winning. But what I will say that as a team, I don’t think we’ve developed that killer instinct yet. We had too many opportunities in the third and fourth quarter where we really could have shut the door.”

Byard is right. The Bears need to figure out how to close out ball games. Whether that is developing a killer instinct in late-game situations while protecting a slim lead, building insurmountable leads, or something else I’m not thinking of right now. Whatever it is, the Ben Johnson-led Bears need to lock in and figure it out. If they do, they’ll reach the heights they want and punch their ticket to the postseason. But if they don’t, then this team is going to crash back to earth — possibly in gut-wrenching fashion.

This is where Ben Johnson needs to be better than his predecessors. A quality coach will rally the troops, lead them through the tough times, and onto victory. The best coaches have the ability to weather the storm. To this point, I think Johnson has done a good job of doing that with a team loaded with players who knew nothing but losing before his arrival. Soon, he (and the team) will need to apply what they’ve said about needing to finish strong to a game day situation. And what better time to do it than against Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers?
