BRIGHTON, N.Y. — The Brighton Central School District Board of Education discussed a proposal to convert a rear field into a synthetic turf sports field during its meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 18. Concerns were raised by several parents about potential runoff issues and the use of “forever chemicals” in the turf.
“Artificial turf has a chemical component in it called PFAS, also known as forever chemicals, which are a known carcinogen,” said David Masur, executive director of PennEnvironment.
Masur also expressed concern as a parent about the district’s decision-making process. “Concerns me as a parent that the school district would make that decision and move ahead with a proposal like that without giving more input, especially from health experts and professionals,” he said.
Some parents feel the district is moving too quickly for their input to be considered.
News10NBC is working to find out when the school board will vote on the proposal.
