Defense Ministry identifies launch site of rockets fired toward Mazzeh ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced that it has identified the launch site of the rockets fired toward the Mazzeh 86 area in the capital, Damascus, at dawn on 15 November.

Aasem Ghalyoun, head of the Information and Communication Department, said that a specialized military team was able, through studying the angles of impact and the clustering of the rockets, to discover the launch site.

He added, via his Facebook account, that the ministry had managed to locate where the rockets had been fired toward the Mazzeh neighborhood, an attack that caused injuries among residents, confirming that the site is now being secured to complete the investigations.

A video released by the state-run al-Ikhbariya channel showed electrical circuits that the cameraman said were used to launch the rockets, along with a cap used to close the rocket’s valve.

According to the map shown by al-Ikhbariya in the footage, the launch site is located in the al-Lawan area within Kafar Sousah (a district in southwest Damascus), on the outskirts of the city.

Based on the points marked on the map, one of the rockets landed in the Mazzeh 86 area, while the other fell on the road leading to Qasr al-Shaab (the People’s Palace, the main presidential palace in Damascus).

The state-run al-Ikhbariya channel identified both the launch site and the impact points of the two Katyusha rockets that hit the Mazzeh 86 neighborhood and the road leading to the People’s Palace in Damascus.

Katyusha rockets

At least one woman was injured when two Katyusha rockets exploded, shaking the capital, Damascus, on the evening of Friday, 14 November.

The explosions rocked the city, and their sound was heard across the capital, according to Enab Baladi correspondents.

The Information and Communication Department at the Ministry of Defense told the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) that Damascus had been subjected to what it described as a “treacherous attack”, in which two Katyusha rockets were launched from the outskirts of the city toward residential neighborhoods in the Mazzeh area and its surroundings.

The Ministries of Defense and Interior began an investigation into what they described as this “heinous attack”, saying at the time that they were collecting the necessary evidence and determining the trajectory of the rockets and their launch sites.

The Mazzeh 86 area saw a heavy deployment of security forces to determine the circumstances of the incident, with no clear cause of the explosion initially established. Instructions were issued to prevent people from approaching the scene, according to residents who spoke to Enab Baladi.

Enab Baladi also observed road closures in several streets of Mazzeh and a state of alert among ambulance crews.

The 86th District in Mazzeh is one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in Damascus, with extensive informal housing. It is not far from the Mazzeh Villas neighborhood, which hosts security and diplomatic facilities.

The neighborhood is located less than 1.5 kilometers from Qasr al-Shaab, the main presidential palace, and approximately four kilometers from the launch site, according to measurements made by Enab Baladi using Google Maps.

Mazzeh, a stage for rockets and clashes

The area had previously been targeted by Israeli airstrikes and attacks before the fall of the regime, due to the presence of Iranian commanders and allied militias in Mazzeh and the neighboring districts.

One of the most prominent of these strikes took place on 8 October 2024, when Israel bombed three apartments in the “14” residential buildings in the Mazzeh neighborhood, killing 19 civilians and injuring 11 others.

After the fall of the regime, the area also witnessed security tensions, especially in the early days, when clashes broke out with groups the government refers to as “remnants of the defunct regime”.

On 3 September, an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in the Mazzeh 86 area without causing human casualties.

The head of Internal Security in Damascus governorate, Brigadier General Osama Mohammad Khair Atkeh, said that the explosion in the Mazzeh 86 area in Damascus was caused by an IED targeting one of the Internal Security members.
