A man who shot a pregnant woman after she rejected his advances in a suburban grocery store was sentenced to nearly half a century in prison, the DuPage County State’s Attorney announced Friday.
42-year-old former Chicago man Lawrence Grant was sentenced to 48 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections Friday, months after a four-day-long trial concluded in late May.
Around 7 p.m. on January 28, 2022, Willowbrook police responded to the scene of a crashed vehicle on Route 83 and found a pregnant woman with a gunshot wound in her back, authorities said.
The woman was transported to a local hospital where the baby was delivered while she was in surgery. She was eight months pregnant at the time. Both the victim and her baby survived and recovered, police said.
Police learned that prior to the crash, the victim, another individual and Grant were engaged in a “verbal altercation that eventually turned physical” in a grocery store located on the 6300 block of Kingery Highway, authorities said.
The altercation started after “advances” by Grant were rejected by the victim, DuPage County States’s Attorney Robert Berlin said.
“After having his advances rejected by the victim and turning a verbal altercation with the victim’s boyfriend physical, Mr. Grant continued to escalate the matter with nearly fatal consequences,” Berlin said. “We are all very thankful that the woman and her unborn child survived this terrifying ordeal.”
After the altercation, the three left in separate vehicles, police said. However, Grant followed the victim as she traveled southbound on Route 83.
While following the victim, Grant shot at her, striking her vehicle several times and her once in the back — causing her to crash, police said.
Grant was located hours later at the University of Chicago Hospital where authorities say he was admitted on an unrelated matter. The vehicle he was driving was found on fire approximately one block from the hospital.
He was taken into custody immediately after his discharge, authorities said.
The jury found Grant guilty of one count of attempted first-degree murder, one count of aggravated battery with a firearm and two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm — all Class X felonies.
Grant has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since his bond was set at $2 million in February 2022.
