Real Housewives of Orange County: It’s strictly business. ...Middle East

News by : (The Orange County Register) -

There’s a telling moment at the end “The Real Housewives of Orange County” episode on Thursday, Nov. 13 that hints at why this 19th season got so mired in who said what to whom, and why.

To quote Michael Corleone in “The Godfather” at the moment the college boy realizes he can be a cold-blooded killer too, “It’s not personal, Sonny, it’s strictly business.”

Only in our example, Katie Ginella is Michael, Jenn Pedranti is older brother Sonny Corleone, and well, who could be the Godfather other than Bravo’s Andy Cohen, who’s struggling to keep his capos in control in this second of three reunion shows.

Katie is shouting at Jenn for not having her back when she came under fire midway through the season for allegedly spilling all kinds of housewife tea to the powerful Realty-Gossip Complex that President Dwight D. Eisenhower tried to warn us all about oh so long ago.

To Katie, Jenn’s betrayal of their friendship led to Katie being shunned by all the housewives and eliminated from nearly all of the episodes in the second half of the season.

“We’re both victims,” Jenn argues for unclear reasons.

“So I (bleeped) with your paycheck and your livelihood?” Katie replies. “If I had done that to you – “

” – what?” Jenn demands.

“I had to stop filming,” Katie says, her voice rising in volume to be heard over Jenn and Gretchen Rossi, who join in the attack on Katie.

Cohen mostly sits there looking like he’d rather be at home in his tomato garden.

“If you would have stuck with me for the littlest bit, that wouldn’t have happened,” Katie continues. “So the fact that I had called about how if [you] and I could have stayed aligned in the slightest, I could have kept filming?”

The question lingers as its significance sinks in. Katie had asked the production team how she could continue appearing on the show and was told that if no one was willing to film with her.

It’s business. The housewives get salaries for their appearance on the show. They try to leverage their reality fame to even more money through side businesses hawking frozen food, prepackaged shots of booze, real estate sales, fitness ventures and more.

In the 19th season of the “Housewives” series that launched the entire franchise, these women are savvy professionals playing a hard-nosed game to be the most popular, and thus well-paid, stars on the show.

When harmful gossip surfaces, there’s a monetary motivation to blame the messenger.

So bye, Katie, because in the end, it really didn’t matter if you were telling the truth or not. It didn’t matter whether you were leaking information to gossip podcasters and bloggers. The rest of the housewives lost faith in you, and in that sense, Katie was right: Jenn’s abandonment of her cost her dearly.

What else did we learn this week? Katie’s husband Matt Ginella showed up to defend his wife’s claims. Matt brought some receipts – screenshots of texts from Gretchen’s longtime partner Slade Smiley – though nothing much more than he’d already said during the season.

Interestingly, neither Slade nor Jenn’s fiancé, Ryan Boyajian, came to the reunion, though both were invited, a fact that piqued Cohen’s interest at one point.

“Where is Slade?” he asked Gretchen. “It is interesting. He usually doesn’t stay away from the cameras.”

Matt, who seemed overmatched by the volume and velocity of Gretchen’s debate style, took a shot at Slade for being romantically involved with four Orange County housewives over 19 seasons.

“I’m the third housewife,” Gretchen replied, so at least she’s on the medalists podium.

Given how much of the episode was rehashing old feuds from the season, some of the best material happened in the in-between places before and after breaks.

As Heather and Gina Kirschenheiter carried on a very serious conversation about Heather’s comedy acting career, Shannon Storms Beador started to fidget.

“Can you ask Andy if we can go to the bathroom?” Shannon whispered to Emily. Andy, for whom there’s apparently no end to the ways he controls the housewives lives, perked up at his name.

“The bathroom,” Shannon whispered again.

“I’m about to end this, and then I will ask for a break,” Cohen silently mouthed, which finally was enough to distract Heather and Gina.

“Hello? I’m asking a question,” she told Cohen, who explained that Shannon needed to go.

“But this is important to me,” Heather replied as if Cohen had lost track of the order of operations that rule the housewives’ universe.
