The Anthony Davis snowball started rolling down the hill this week, and it’s finally become too big to ignore.
With the Dallas Mavericks finally moving on from general manager Nico Harrison, the Dallas Mavericks’ future has become a hot topic around the league. Many are staring at their win-now roster, wondering how ownership or a new front office management will choose to proceed. Is the plan to continue to build upon Harrison’s shaky post-Luka Doncic plan that centered around Davis and the currently injured Kyrie Irving? Or might Dallas look at Cooper Flagg and see an easy case for jumpstarting a full-scale rebuild?
If one thing is for sure, a slew of fans and league analysts believe the latter makes the most sense. And this has led many to ponder what Davis’ trade market could look like over the next handful of months. Marc Stein really kicked things into high gear on his Substack. He reported that Davis’ camp is expected to work closely with the Mavericks over the next couple of months and monitor whether an in-season trade makes sense.
Set to make a combined $175.4 million over the next three seasons, the 32-year-old would be far from an easily movable contract. The new CBA era has made it harder and harder to acquire high-paid superstars, meaning it is that much easier to come up with a potential short list of trade candidates. Not only do you need to have financial flexibility, but you also need to have the assets.
And, well, that’s where the Chicago Bulls come in.

The Chicago Bulls have become one of the most popular teams associated with Anthony Davis over the last handful of days. To be absolutely clear, this has not been motivated by a direct report that states either the Bulls’ interest in pursuing Davis or Davis’ interest in coming to Chicago. It’s all been speculation.
Nevertheless, that speculation hasn’t stopped. CBS’ Sports’ Sam Quinn ranked Chicago second on his list of possible landing spots for the one-time champ. Zach Lowe and Michael Pina of The Ringer have both pitched Bulls trades that they believe could entice Dallas. SBNation’s Ricky O’Donnell did the same. Even John Wall poured some more fuel on the social media fire Thursday morning, noting how the news has made it sound as if Davis in Chicago could be a match.
The trade concepts have all been rather similar. Chicago sends out multiple of their expiring contracts along with draft capital. Nikola Vucevic and Coby White are typically attached to either players like Patrick Williams or Kevin Huerter to make the money work. White would also clearly be a prized asset in this trade, as the Mavericks could look to re-sign him in the summer and add him alongside Cooper Flagg for the long haul.
Pina included a 2029 unprotected first-round pick, while Lowe and O’Donnell went with a future first and the lottery-protected Portland pick. For what it’s worth, the Bulls do have the benefit of having ALL their future first-rounders, as well as that additional Trail Blazers pick that can convey up until 2028. Once again, this remains a big reason why Chicago is an easy team to throw into trade conversations for a big star.
We also can’t ignore the hot start to the year. While they have gone on to lose four straight, the 5-0 start undoubtedly left a favorable impression on many. Josh Giddey has performed like an All-Star in his first year of a five-year contract, while Matas Buzelis has continued to show he has tantalizing untapped potential. Adding a player of Anthony Davis’ caliber would give the Bulls a true star who can lift their ceiling on both ends and help ensure these promising young players play meaningful games.
From that perspective, it isn’t crazy to see why the organization may have an interest in Davis, especially if the price comes in cheaper than expected. How often do you truly get a chance to add someone that, when healthy, is a borderline Top 10 player in the NBA and a leading Defensive Player of the Year candidate? In many ways, Davis is the kind of talent the Bulls have been trying to attract/find for years.
We all know it’s not that simple, though. There is a reason that Davis has immediately been thrown into trade rumors upon the Mavs’ slow start, and it’s not only because of the looming change of leadership in Dallas. Building around Davis is a risk and always has been. He has played 14 of a possible 45 games since Los Angeles sent him to Dallas last February. Overall, he has played more than 56 games only once since the 2018-19 season – aka his last season with the Pelicans. Davis’ durability has been a major problem for years, and the odds of this becoming any better as he inches toward his mid-30s are extremely low.
Again, nobody is denying Davis’ impact when he is on the floor, but is the juice worth the squeeze? The price tag may not feel all that high, especially when we consider that White could technically walk this summer. However, the Bulls’ front office is fresh off seeing how detrimental moving multiple future first-round picks can be for risky win-now ventures. It can set up back years.
Also, remember, a big reason the Bulls have even been thrown into this conversation is because they can actually make a deal work. That means they could possibly make a deal work for another available superstar down the road, folks! This is a team that has finally created meaningful flexibility. I understand that at some point you have to do something with that, but is jumping at the first opportunity to land a flashy name the right one? Stars get antsy all the time!
The Chicago Bulls came into this season tempering expectations. They preached the importance of player development and having a patient approach. As of now, I don’t believe that this Anthony Davis talk will amount to anything real. But there is no question that the more the chatter grows, the more the Bulls’ patience will be tested. Let’s see how they respond.
