For a man who doesn’t sweat, Andrew’s panic is telling ...Middle East

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has long exuded an air of unruffled superiority but his blind panic is revealed in the latest tranche of emails published by US politicians investigating the Epstein scandal.

The Royal Family long ago abandoned its unofficial motto of “never complain, never explain”. Down the years, palace officials have called in editors, sent legal letters, briefed and counter-briefed, and used growing privacy law to stop scrutiny.

But any efforts to limit the damage from the King’s brother’s involvement in the Epstein scandal have failed. That damage to Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, has only worsened after thousands of documents from the estate of the late convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein were published by the US House Oversight Committee on Wednesday.

They show Mountbatten-Windsor emailing Epstein and his sidekick, the currently jailed sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, to discuss a PR strategy to help distance himself from the sordid accusations about young women they all faced. “Please make sure that every statement or legal letter states clearly that I am NOT involved and that I knew and know NOTHING about any of these allegations,” he wrote. “I can’t take any more of this my end.”

This was in March 2011, three months after Mountbatten-Windsor claims to have cut off all contact with Epstein, and his panicky responses were equally reflected in internal discussions at Buckingham Palace, where the Royal Family and their advisors were in crisis mode.

When it was first alleged in 2011 that Virginia Giuffre had been trafficked around the world by Epstein and Maxwell to have sex with Mountbatten-Windsor, he furiously denied it both publicly and privately, as he continues to do. Senior aides to Queen Elizabeth II sat Mountbatten-Windsor down in a room and grilled him and after accepting his denials, spent more than a month trying to hold the line, fielding wall-to-wall calls about the scandal day after day. It was to become a regular feature of life in the Royal Household for many years.

Some of them kick themselves now for not doing more to keep Queen Elizabeth’s favourite son on the straight and narrow. Inside the household, everyone knew Epstein was bad news even before he was sent to jail but they seemed incapable of persuading Mountbatten-Windsor to give up the friendship.

He must accept ultimate responsibility for that but in addition, although it was long considered sacrilege in sections of the British press to criticise Elizabeth II when she was on the throne, his mother too must shoulder part of the blame.

Andrew should have been forced to stand down from royal duties at least a decade ago. It was not just Epstein; even before the alleged Chinese spies, there were concerns about his business activities. If he had been a politician, his career would have been long over by 2015.

The then Prince Charles argued for stronger action, according to courtiers close to him, but the then Queen refused. “He wasn’t listened to,” one courtier said.

“He hoped that Andrew would come to his own decision. Pressure was applied but it never happened.”

We now see the panic of Mountbatten-Windsor, a man who allegedly doesn’t sweat, and the fallout from a crisis management strategy that tried to limit the damage at each stage instead of tackling the problem at its root.

A public or parliamentary inquiry is now needed into all of the allegations against Mountbatten-Windsor. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.
