ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Allegations of misconduct have emerged at the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office involving missing eyeballs from a homicide victim. Ezell Harris, owner of the Greater Rochester Area Mortuary Transport Service, claimed the victim’s eyes were missing after he transported the body to a funeral home.
Harris said the victim was not an organ donor. He spoke about the missing eyeballs at a Monroe County Legislature meeting and is calling for an investigation.
“A body was retrieved from the Medical Examiner’s office. It was delivered to the funeral home. I get a call from the funeral director saying that the individual’s eyes were missing,” Harris said.
Marsha Augustin: What was your reaction when you found out the victims eyeballs were removed?
Ezell Harris: Well I can tell you I wasn’t surprised because over thirty years ago I had a grandmother tell me she believes this happened to her 18 year old grandson who was murdered.
Harris, who is studying to become a licensed funeral director, explained the process of handling organ and tissue donors. “You have to drain the liquid,” he said. “What we then do is that we put cotton in and put an eye cap and we glue it.”
Harris wrote a letter to Monroe County Executive Adam Bello, the district attorney, the state Department of Health, and the sheriff’s office, urging an investigation.
“They handle more than 4,000 bodies a year and you know within the past couple of years they misidentified a person,” Harris said.
In May, News10NBC reported a case where the Medical Examiner’s Office mistakenly identified a body as a missing Rochester woman based on dental records. The error was discovered after the body was cremated.
“It’s very traumatic for the family finding out their loved one was not dead. And so what I am to do is to hold the feet to the fire and hold Adam Bello accountable for what’s happening at the medical examiner’s office,” Harris said.
The county told us at Wednesday they have no comment.
