Al-Sharaa: The Bashar al-Assad case is “problematic” for Russia ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

Syria’s transitional president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, said the case of the deposed Syrian regime leader, Bashar al-Assad, is problematic for Russia, noting that relations between Syria and Russia are still in their early stages.

Al-Sharaa affirmed that his government insists on prosecuting Assad, who took refuge in Russia after his regime collapsed in December 2024, adding, “We will preserve our right as Syrians to demand Assad’s prosecution.”

Speaking in an interview with The Washington Post published today, Wednesday, November 12, al-Sharaa said, “We were at war with Russia for ten years, and it was a harsh and difficult war, and they announced my death several times.”

Syria needs Russia because it is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, al-Sharaa said, adding, “We need its vote to be on our side in some issues, and we have strategic interests with it.”

Al-Sharaa indicated that he does not want to push Russia into taking alternative or different options in dealing with Syria.

Al-Sharaa’s Moscow visit “successful”

The Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, said Russia hopes bilateral relations between Russia and Syria will continue to develop independently.

Answering a question on Tuesday, November 11, about whether President al-Sharaa’s visit to Washington might cause some obstacles to Russia’s talks with the Syrian authorities, Peskov said, “I do not think these matters are interconnected; we are building our relations with the new Syrian leadership.”

He noted that al-Sharaa’s recent visit to Moscow was “very substantive and highly successful,” adding that the talks between Presidents al-Sharaa and Putin were very lengthy, according to Russia’s Sputnik agency.

In his Fox News interview, al-Sharaa also addressed his talks in Moscow, indicating that “part of them involved demanding the handover of those wanted to Syrian justice, but the Russians have a different position on extraditing criminals.”

What the Syrian-Russian talks covered

During his visit to Russia on October 15, al-Sharaa discussed several files, foremost among them Russian bases and economic issues between the two countries.

Ashhad Al-Salibi, Deputy Director of the Russia and Eastern Europe Department at Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, said the Syrian president demanded Bashar al-Assad’s handover “clearly and repeatedly” during his visit to Moscow, adding that the Russian side “showed understanding toward achieving transitional justice in Syria.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the Foreign Ministry made significant efforts to establish cooperation with the new Syrian authorities, according to RIA Novosti.

Lavrov also told Sputnik that Russian President Vladimir Putin “discussed everything” during his meeting with al-Sharaa, including the issue of Russian bases.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said Syria needs to rebuild its infrastructure and that Russia is capable of providing support.

He noted that Russia and Syria agreed to hold a meeting of the intergovernmental committee in the near future, adding that “humanitarian supply issues” for Syria were discussed during talks between Putin and al-Sharaa at the Kremlin.

Novak also confirmed that Russia and Syria discussed cooperation in various fields, including tourism.

Damascus expressed interest in Russian wheat and medicines, while the Russian official showed his country’s readiness to continue working in Syria’s oil fields.
