With the shutdown expected to end soon, what will happen to SNAP and air travel ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

WASHINGTON — The longest federal government shutdown in history could end as soon as Wednesday. A bill to fund the government is heading to the House after the Senate passed the measure with support from eight Democrats on Monday night, who broke party lines.

If the House approves the bill on Wednesday, the package would go to President Donald Trump for a signature. Trump has said he supports the bipartisan deal. For weeks, News10NBC has covered how the shutdown has made a local impact, including on the food assistance program SNAP and air travel. Here’s what we know about how the bill would impact SNAP and air travel if it becomes law.

US flight cancellations could drag on even after the shutdown ends

Air travelers may see worsening cancellations and delays this week, even if the government shutdown ends. The Federal Aviation Administration is rolling out deeper cuts to flights at 40 major U.S. airports, officials said on Monday.

As News10NBC has covered, the FAA cut back on flights at 40 airports to maintain travel safety as air traffic controllers exhibit signs of strain. Air traffic controllers haven’t gotten paid since the shutdown began and have called out of work, citing stress and the need to take on second jobs.

The FAA’s list doesn’t include the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport, but it does include several airports that Rochester offers flights to. We spoke with Rochester airport director Andy Moore about how the shutdown is impacting the airport.

Since Friday, airlines have canceled over 8,000 flights across the country. One in 10 flights nationwide were scratched Sunday — the fourth worst day for cancellations in almost two years, according aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Legislation to reopen the government would fund SNAP through next September

More than 135,000 people who rely on SNAP for food assistance across the Rochester region have faced uncertainty since Nov. 1, when the federal government put a pause on issuing full benefits. However, with the deal making its way through Congress, an end is possibly in sight.

If the deal becomes law, it would fund SNAP through next September. For weeks, News10NBC has covered how food banks have stepped up in the place of SNAP. Foodlink, the Rochester-based regional foodbank that supports meal programs across 10 counties, has seen an increase in demand.

The Trump administration said it planned to partially fund SNAP after multiple judges ruled that the government must use its emergency contingency funds rather than pause payments. Later, the Supreme Court ruled that the government doesn’t have to fully fund SNAP, only partially fund it.

In addition, Gov. Kathy Hochul directed state agencies to help with issuing full SNAP benefits. We’re working to learn if those benefits have showed up on people’s cards yet.
