On Tuesday (Nov. 11), Grammy-winning hip-hop group Salt-N-Pepa visited Hudson’s talk show to reflect on more than three decades of boundary-obliterating moves. From reclaiming their masters (which they alluded to in their Rock Hall induction speech on Nov. 8) to evolving with music-industry changes, the trio’s conversation also dove into their iconic fashion statements and the story behind “Whatta Man,” their 1994 Billboard Hot 100 No. 3 hit with En Vogue.

A few hours before the episode aired, the official Jennifer Hudson Show social media accounts shared clips of Salt-N-Pepa making their way down the spirit tunnel, which was coincidentally parodied on Saturday Night Live the same day as the Rock Hall ceremony. The three ladies hit their cleanest dance moves, the Cabbage Patch chief among them, to the tune of the crew’s recreation of “Push It,” which reached No. 19 on the Hot 100 and appeared on the group’s 1986 debut album, Hot, Cool & Vicious. The Jennifer Hudson Show crew’s remixed “Push It” lyrics also included a reference to the trio’s recent Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction.

The trio was officially inducted into the prestigious club following a speech from 2023 Rock Hall inductee Missy Elliott and a medley of their classics, including both “Push It” and “Whatta Man,” the latter of which gave way to an En Vogue appearance. Most notably, DJ Spinderella became the first female DJ ever inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

“When I started, it was a rare thing to see a woman behind turntables,” Spinderella said during her induction speech. “It was literally the boys’ club, so I had to carve my own lane. I had to show up. It was dedication; it was my craft, and I never missed a beat, in 40 years y’all … I carry every female DJ who ever dared to dream. Every woman who touched a turntable and said, ‘I can do that too.’ This is ours. Respect the DJ.”

Though Salt-N-Pepa has not released a studio album since 1997’s Brand New, the group remains one of the most lauded and beloved in hip-hop history. In 2023, Billboard ranked the trio the No. 8 Best Rap Group of All Time, making them the highest-placing all-woman outfit on the list.
