The Dallas Mavericks made the change that many fans have called for over the last nine months.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania and Tim MachMahon, the Mavericks have decided to move on from general manager Nico Harrison. The decision was reportedly made at a meeting this morning by owner Patrick Dumont. The franchise will reportedly put executives Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi in charge of basketball operations on an interim basis.
The decision comes only hours after the Mavericks lost in the final seconds to the Milwaukee Bucks. They have dropped to 3-8 on the season, which has them second-to-last in the Western Conference behind only the reeling New Orleans Pelicans.

To be sure, the Dallas Mavericks’ decision to fire Nico Harrison was not solely based on the team’s slow start to the 2025-26 campaign. The front office leader fell into scalding hot water after making what many believe is the most mind-boggling trade in NBA history. One season after making the NBA Finals, Harrison chose to trade superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in a deal that centered around Anthony Davis.
Not only was Dallas already considered a true contender in the West, but Doncic was considered one of the league’s best and brightest at 25 years old. The franchise was seemingly set up for success for years to come, and Harrison threw that away for an older and less durable star.
To make matters worse, the trade blindsided the entire NBA. Harrison exclusively worked with the Lakers on a trade and did not open negotiations to the rest of the league. In other words, he seemingly worked against the franchise’s best interest and removed any chance of a true bidding war/better return.
The Mavericks would go on to immediately lose Anthony Davis to a multi-week injury. Kyrie Irving also ended up suffering a torn ACL in March. Dallas would go on to lose in the Play-In Tournament and finish 39-43. While they ended up receiving extreme lottery luck and winning the Cooper Flagg Sweepstakes, this clearly wasn’t enough to cool off Harrison’s seat.
Dallas will now search for a new leader who can right the wrongs left behind by Harrison.
