United States allows the Syrian Embassy in Washington to resume operations ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani announced today, Tuesday, November 11, that he has received the decision lifting the previously imposed legal measures on Syria’s mission and its embassy in the United States.

In a post on X, the minister said he received the decision from his U.S. counterpart, Marco Rubio, commenting, “Today, Syria regains the ability to exercise its diplomatic role with full freedom on U.S. soil, within the Syrian Foreign Ministry’s strategic plan.”

Al-Shibani is accompanying Syria’s transitional president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, who is visiting Washington, during which a meeting was held between al-Sharaa and his American counterpart, Donald Trump, on Monday evening at the White House.

The Syrian foreign minister described the meeting as “constructive” in a post on X, noting that it addressed all aspects of the Syrian file.

For his part, Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, told Syria’s state-run Al-Ikhbariya channel that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sent an official letter to the Syrians allowing the reopening of the Syrian Embassy in the United States whenever the Syrian side wishes, which constitutes a lifting of the previous diplomatic ban.

He added that President Trump and Secretary Rubio stressed the need for immediate implementation of the plans discussed during the meeting between the Syrian and American presidents in Washington without delay, with a focus over the next two months on economic and energy files and on the security agreement.

Olabi explained that Syrian diplomacy is handling different files in parallel, according to priorities, organizing them within the ministries and following them up through the relevant officials to ensure smooth implementation.

On November 10, President al-Sharaa held a closed-door meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at 11 a.m. Washington time, 7 p.m. Damascus time.

Reuters reported that al-Sharaa arrived at the White House without the customary protocol usually accorded to foreign leaders, entering through a side entrance out of reporters’ view rather than the main West Wing door where cameras are normally set up.

What the al-Sharaa–Trump meeting covered

Syria’s transitional president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, held a meeting at the White House with U.S. President Donald Trump that addressed the agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), U.S. sanctions on Syria, and a security arrangement with Israel.

According to the Syrian Presidency, Monday’s talks on November 10 explored ways to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation across various fields, in addition to discussing a number of regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Attending the talks were Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, along with other officials from both sides.

After the meeting, Syria’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Trump and al-Sharaa spoke for more than an hour, during which Trump expressed admiration for “the new Syrian leadership and the Syrian people.”

The two sides agreed, according to the ministry, to proceed with implementing the March 10 agreement signed between President Ahmad al-Sharaa and SDF commander Mazloum Abdi.

According to the same statement, the U.S. side affirmed its support for reaching a security agreement with Israel aimed at enhancing regional stability.

The ministry added that Trump “praised Syria’s successful leadership of the preceding phase and the achievements realized,” and confirmed the United States’ readiness “to provide the necessary support to ensure success in reconstruction and development in the coming phase.”

The U.S. president also expressed support for “efforts to spur recovery and investment in Syria,” affirming the commitment to proceed with lifting sanctions imposed under the Caesar Act, to expand development opportunities, and attract investment.

At Trump’s direction, an expanded working session was held that brought together Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, to follow up on “what was agreed between al-Sharaa and Trump and set clear implementation mechanisms.”
