WEBSTER, N.Y. — Sunday’s snowfall marked the first of the season, and road crews were ready with salt supplies to treat the roads. But last winter, many in our region faced a salt shortage due to high demand during extended cold weather.

News10NBC’s Chris Fortune set out to see if the region is better prepared for this winter. Contractor Tony Zucco told Chris he ordered his road salt supply earlier this year.
Zucco said he was proactive in securing his salt supply by speaking with suppliers during the summer.
“Supply as of right now has been good,” Zucco said. “Ironically, we bought salt at the tail end of summer, which is unheard of. But we were just trying to be on the cautious side of making sure that we had inventory prior to the season kicking in.”
Zucco’s supply was cut off last December and January due to high demand. Zucco treats roads in Rochester, Fairport, Penfield, Ontario and other areas, using between 1,500 to 2,000 tons of salt annually.
Zucco said, “We really try to stress to not only our customers, but, you know, everybody out there that this is winter and to take it slower and watch your step.”
The Town of Henrietta was hit hard last year, and needed to start conserving salt only halfway through last winter and struggled with its remaining supply.
Chris met with Craig Barber, the town’s superintendent of highways, who said the town is approaching the season as normal. It didn’t order supply earlier than usual, and says it has what it needs. In a typical year, Henrietta goes through around 6,000 tons of salt.
“We haven’t been told of anything changing,” said Barber. “So, we are going to go at this normally as a typical weather.”
“We had three trucks out this morning,” he continued. “We were only hitting bridges because the bridges freeze first and that’s all we had to do today was the bridge run.”
