In late-October, NBC 5 Responds reported frustrated customers said the process of retrieving and applying digital coupons at Jewel-Osco grocery stores was unreliable and time-consuming.
In a statement, Jewel-Osco acknowledged the app issues, saying: “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Our team is actively working to resolve these problems and enhance the app performance. We’re committed to ensuring that all customers can easily access their digital coupons, rewards, and weekly deals without interruption.”
Illinois lawmakers said the problem extends beyond Jewel-Osco, however, and some are looking to step in.
State Rep. Janet Yang Rohr (D-Naperville) has introduced legislation that would require grocery stores to offer alternatives to digital-only coupons. The bill would mandate that advertised prices be honored even if a customer doesn’t have access to a smartphone or app.
“A retailer, if they are advertising a price, they have to be able to give that price to the consumer—even if that consumer doesn’t have a digital device,” Yang Rohr said.
She suggests stores could offer paper coupons in addition to digital coupons.
