Alabama, LSU add another entry to their recent history low-scoring slugfests ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

In its 20-9 victory over the LSU Tigers on Saturday night, the Alabama Crimson Tide put up its lowest point total in SEC play this season. The same can be said for the Tigers, who haven’t scored single digits in a conference game since putting up 7 against Texas A&M in 2020.

The low-scoring slugfest fits within the trend of Alabama-LSU matchups in recent memory. Since 2010, this early November rivalry game has consistently featured heavier defensive performances from both sides that force the offenses to go below the teams’ averages; even in games like this week’s, where one squad comes in highly ranked and the other isn’t at the same level, the competition frequently levels out.

Analyst David Cone called it a “great football game” on the Crain and Company college football show.

“It felt like an old-school LSU-Alabama football game,” he said.

The Crimson Tide went into Saturday putting up 29.4 points per game in SEC play, and the Tigers went in scoring 23.2. Last year, the Tigers came in scoring 30.5 and finished the season averaging 26.8, and their 13-point outing against Alabama was their lowest in conference play.

Since 2010, LSU has scored below its SEC average in 15 of its 17 matchups against Alabama, and the Crimson Tide has gone below in 13 of 17. Six of those for LSU were its lowest SEC point total of the season, including Saturday’s loss, while seven of those were Alabama’s lowest SEC outing.

The most prominent example of this dynamic that comes to mind is the 2011 regular season game in Tuscaloosa, when the Tigers were ranked No. 1 and the Crimson Tide were No. 2. LSU won that game 9-6, coming away victorious in a battle of only field goals.

In a rematch for the national championship that same season, Alabama kicked five field goals and scored one touchdown, and LSU was held to 0 to end a year in which it frequently scored in the 40s and 50s.

In 2014, when Alabama averaged 34.2 points in conference play and LSU scored right under 20, the Crimson Tide won in overtime 20-13. Two years later, in a dynamic offensive year for former head coach Nick Saban’s squad that lost in the national championship and put up 39.8 points against the SEC, the team won a near-stalemate in Baton Rouge by a score of 10-0.

Even in recent years, as both teams have boasted high-ranking offensive attacks led by NFL-quality skill players, the scores have dipped below average. In 2023, the Tigers were first in the country in scoring, putting up 42.9 points in SEC play and 45.5 on the entire season under the guidance of Heisman-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels. They scored 28 points in a loss to Alabama, which seems like a high amount but was their lowest in SEC games and second-lowest on the year.

In Saturday’s game, it wasn’t quite the same vintage slugfest with neither team getting anything going. Alabama amassed 344 total yards to LSU’s 232, and the Crimson Tide had three sacks to the Tigers’ one. The theme was Alabama’s defense bending but not breaking — LSU got into the red zone four times but kicked three field goals with no touchdowns.

“I feel like they keep getting better,” head coach Kalen DeBoer said about Alabama’s defense. Speaking of the turnovers the team forced, he said, “They have a mindset right now where, if they hustle, they wind up creating breaks.”

It might not be the high-level offense performance the Crimson Tide has set as the standard this season under ever-consistent quarterback Ty Simpson and a talented receiving core, but the team is sure to be content with a win in a game where, as history shows, offense often gets ugly.

Alabama will next play against Oklahoma this Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The game will kick off at 2:30 p.m. and be broadcast on ABC.
