Alabama notched its third straight victory over LSU 20-9 on Saturday night. The victory included what has become a familiar sight for this Crimson Tide team — disciplined play.
In the Crimson Tide’s first 16 games under head coach Kalen DeBoer, the team was penalized more than its opponent. This has not been the case as of late.
Alabama was flagged just twice compared to LSU’s 10, making the Crimson Tide the less penalized team in four of its last six games.
The first flag did not come until the second half when pass-rusher Jordan Renaud was called for a facemask when attempting to sack LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. The second was an illegal block in the back on corner Zabien Brown during a Cole Adams punt return in the fourth quarter.
Undisciplined play had become a trademark of Alabama football that carried over from former head coach Nick Saban’s final season through DeBoer’s first. The lack of penalties shows a mental toughness this Crimson Tide team has adopted over the course of the season.
“It’s just being fundamentally sound and focused on your job,” star safety Bray Hubbard said. “Penalties can hurt you.”
The Crimson Tide offensive line arguably had the best performance of the night, finishing with zero penalties as a group. This is a trend that must be replicated next week against an elite Oklahoma pass-rush if the offense is going to stay ahead of the chains.
As for LSU, 10 penalties was not a part of the recipe for success for an offense that has struggled the majority of the season.
The Tigers were called for four false starts on the night, in part thanks to the elite showing by Crimson Tide fans at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
“They were penalized a lot this game,” tight end Josh Cuevas said, crediting the fans for “making it loud, making it rowdy in there.”
