Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Scarlet Aquatics’ Reid Stellatella, a current senior at St Joseph High School, will head to Allendale, Michigan next fall. The mid-distance freestyler from Piscataway, NJ sent his verbal commitment to Grand Valley State University earlier this month.

Stellatella only joined St. Joe’s swim team as a junior but quickly became a key contributor, helping the program reach the Non-Public North championship for the first time in over a decade. He went undefeated in the 200 freestyle until the state final and capped off his debut season by qualifying for New Jersey’s Meet of Champions.

I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Grand Valley State University! Thank you to my family, coaches, and teammates for their constant support. A special thank you to Coach Andy Boyce and the GVSU coaching staff for this incredible opportunity, and to my current club, Coach Tom, for guiding me and pushing me to succeed. I can’t wait to be a part of the Laker family and compete at the next level! #AnchorUp #LakerNation #GVSU

At Scarlet’s Gold Championships in March, Stellatella wrapped up his short course season with 2 top 8 finishes. His highest finish came in the 500 free, where he posted a 4:43.44 for 5th. That time was just off his prelims swim of 4:42.53, which was a new PB. Both swims however, were significantly under his best coming into the meet (4:45.75). He also posted personal bests in the 200 free (1:44.17), 100 free (48.74), finishing 6th and 13th, respectively.

The highlight of Stellatella’s long course season was the Trojan Los Angeles Invitational at USC. He posted personal bests in the 200 free (1:58.41), 400 free (4:12.43), and 800 free (8:48.33), finishing 47th, 39th, and 21st, respectively. He also swam the 1500 in 16:53.47, and while that swim wasn’t a PB, he clocked a 16:40.69 two weeks later at Scarlet’s long course Gold Championships to crush his previous best.

Best times SCY:

200 free: 1:44.17 500 free: 4:42.53 1000 free: 9:44.65 1650 free: 16:19.28

GVSU competes in Division II as part of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The men’s team has dominated the league, winning 14 conference titles overall and entering this season as 11-time defending champions. Last year, they were led by breaststroke/IM specialist Esteban Pizarro, who has since transferred to Kentucky.

Distance freestyle has been a strong suit for Grand Valley, with three swimmers placing in the top eight of the mile and five scoring in the 500 free at last year’s conference meet. While Stellatella sits just outside scoring range in the 200 and 500, his 1650 is fast enough to contribute. At last year’s meet, it took 1:40.43 in the 200 free, 4:37.33 in the 500, and 16:21.86 in the 1650 to score.

Stellatella will be joined in next year’s freshman class by Ben Quisno of Toledo, Ohio, a sprint freestyler with bests of 21.26 in the 50 and 45.17 in the 100. The two will look to continue the program’s winning legacy.
