Ken Calvert: The new 40th District needs a proven conservative champion ...Middle East

News by : (The Orange County Register) -

Proposition 50 was a pure political power play. Gavin Newsom saw an opportunity to tap into our blue state’s outrage over losing last year’s presidential election and used it to disenfranchise California voters, further consolidating Democrats’ power in Sacramento. Republicans must respond to this political broadside with proven, effective, and reliable conservative leadership.

I announced this week, after Prop. 50’s passage, that I would be running in the newly drawn 40th Congressional District. That’s the district I currently live in and have lived in my entire life. I have previously been elected by voters to represent 70% of the new 40th in Congress, including voters in both Riverside and Orange Counties. Nearly two-thirds of voters in the new 40th reside in Riverside County, with the other third calling Orange County home.

I have decided to run for Congress again because I have a proven record of delivering results for our region. In fact, I have never been more effective than I am now.  As a senior member of the House and Appropriations Committee Subcommittee Chairman, and the third most senior Republican in the House, I am well positioned to get things done in Congress and in partnership with the Trump administration.

I worked with my colleagues, including former Inland Empire Rep. Jerry Lewis, to lay the groundwork for President Trump’s southern border wall by inserting legislative language that exempts its construction from lawsuits by radical liberal environmental groups. Thanks to my strong support for secure borders and other conservative policies, I’ve been honored to earn the endorsement of President Trump in my last two previous campaigns, and I look forward to earning it again.

During the first Trump administration, I helped secure California’s only $50 million transportation grant in a competitive national funding availability. Through the years, I have delivered more federal resources for southern California infrastructure projects than any other member of Congress in history. I have secured more than a billion dollars in federal funding for the expansion of the 91 Freeway, 15 Freeway, and other major transportation projects. I have also secured nearly a billion dollars in federal funding for regional flood control and water projects, including the Murrieta Creek project, the Santa Ana River mainstem project, dredging Newport Harbor, and raising of the Prado Dam which provides critical flood protection for Orange County.

In addition to being effective in Washington, we also need to elect Republicans who are leading our conservative fights right here in California – not those who are simply watching from the sidelines. Despite running my own expensive campaign, I gave nearly $300,000 to the No on Prop 50 campaign, one of the highest totals of all elected Republicans. I have also been at the forefront of the effort to qualify a voter ID initiative here in California. By contributing as well as raising key funding for the voter ID initiative our effort is gaining momentum and currently in the signature gathering phase, with Reform California leading those grassroots efforts.

I have also been at the forefront in the fight for the control of the House of Representatives. Democrats in Washington, D.C. and Sacramento have tried to end my political career many times. In the past two campaign cycles my House seat was seen by many as a swing seat that would help determine who controls Congress.  Just last year, Democrats spent more than $20 million trying to defeat me. They failed. I won the most expensive California congressional race ever won by a Republican.

In the last election cycle alone, I raised and gave over $250,000 to other vulnerable Republicans in the House. I raised over $1 million for the National Republican Congressional Committee last cycle to maintain our Majority. The victories these efforts secured in my race and beyond have made our Republican agenda possible in Congress. Our tax cuts, secure border, and the end of a woke and radical liberal agenda would not be possible without the election of President Trump and our Republican Congress.

With socialists being elected as mayor in New York City and lunatics who fantasize about killing their Republican opponents elected as Attorney General in Virginia, this is no time for conservatives to back away from the political arena. I am running in the new 40th District to stay in the fight for the future of California and our country. I hope conservatives in Riverside and Orange Counties join me in our struggle against an extreme liberal agenda that is on the march here in California, and across the country.
