CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A man arrested in connection with a murder in Plaza Midwood Thursday night is also connected to two other killings in Monroe.

Investigators have identified the Charlotte victim as 68-year-old Gerald Barnes.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers were called to the 1100 block of Central Avenue, near Plaza Midwood, just after 9 p.m. Thursday for a death investigation.

When they arrived, they found Barnes suffering from traumatic injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. As the investigation unfolded, detectives identified Adam Latif Mercado, 34, as a suspect. Mercado was later arrested by the Anson County Sheriff’s Office and transported to Mecklenburg County for questioning. Police said he’s now charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection with Barnes’ death.

Later that night, police in Monroe discovered two men, Matthew Charles Moody, 52, and James Curtis Wallace, 49, dead inside Moody’s apartment on Nelda Drive. Monroe Police were assisting Charlotte detectives with a welfare check when they made the grim discovery.

By Friday morning, investigators in both cities had linked Mercado to all three killings. He now faces multiple murder charges in both Mecklenburg and Union counties.
