Chicago Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze opened the 2025 NFL season on a torrid scoring pace. And even though his scoring production has cooled off in recent weeks, Odunze has shown that there is more to his game than finding the end zone. Frankly, I’m enjoying the continued development of his all-around game.
I’d love to show a sizzle reel of touchdown grabs from last week’s game, but Rome Odunze finished the Week 9 win against the Cincinnati Bengals with 0 catches and 0 receiving yards on 3 targets. Rome Odunze is putting together an all-around great year
Don’t get me wrong. I love watching highlight-reel grabs and receivers who juke defensive backs out of their cleats. But I also enjoy watching players like Rome Odunze clear running lanes for their teammates to shine. Wide receivers who are willing to get their hands dirty as blockers will always hold a special spot in my heart. And with Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson implementing his “no block, no rock” initiative upon arrival, I don’t think Odunze will be blanked too many more times in the future.

It has been an odd week for Rome Odunze. Not only was he blanked in last week’s box score, the pivot to Week 10 began with his father’s online commentary making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Earlier this week, James Odunze (Rome’s father) shared a post on Twitter/X suggesting that the Bears should trade his son to a team that will throw him the ball. Mind you, Rome leads Chicago’s football team in targets, receiving yards, and reception touchdowns. But who am I to let facts get in the way of a good story?
This would be problematic for a bunch of players. But not Odunze, who handled it as well as you could hope. These quotes (via the Tribune) were encouraging to read:
On his father’s onine commentary: “He feels like he needs to voice those things on social media. That’s his prerogative. But he speaks for himself. I speak for myself.” On his usage in Ben Johnson’s offense: “I’m happy. I’m just trying to do my job within this organization as a leader, as a person, as an individual and then as a football player. So trying to excel at a Hall of Fame level in those aspects. That’s all I’m focused on.” On taking pride in his blocking as a receiver: “I just like at the end of the play knowing your block sprung a play or your block was important. I think that’s just the biggest thing receivers like. A lot of times with the scheme designs, your block (as a receiver) isn’t important a lot of times. Even after being shut out by the Bengals defense in Week 9, Rome Odunze still has 59 targets, 31 catches, 473 receiving yards, and 5 touchdowns. This puts him on a pace for 125 targets, 66 receptions, 1,005 yards, and 11 touchdowns. It isn’t the type of record-setting pace Odunze was on after just four games, but it would represent a strong second season and a notable improvement upon his rookie season. Odunze establishing himself as a go-to receiver in this offense would be a big win for him and the team.
