Per Steve Adams at MLBTR, the Cubs and Rea agreed to a new one-year, $6.5 million deal for 2026, with a club option for 2027 (total value would be $13 million, per Adams, so I’m guessing it’s something like $6M for this year, with a $500,000 buyout on a $7M club option).
The Cubs’ option for Rea for 2026 was worth $6 million, with a $750,000 buyout, so the Cubs are effectively putting themselves on the hook for $500,000 more, in exchange for getting that 2027 option. Nice maneuver if Rea is willing to do it, which, apparently he was.
Great to have Rea returning, given what he did for the Cubs in 2025. The 35-year-old righty threw 159.1 innings for the Cubs, mostly out of the rotation, and posted a 3.95 ERA and 4.11 FIP (right around league average performance). Getting that from a guy who can swing in and out of the rotation as necessary, and who actually saw his fastball velocity tick up in his mid-30s, hey, you’ll absolutely take that guy on your roster.
Whether Rea pitches in 2026 out of the rotation or out of the bullpen remains to be seen. It’ll depend, as it did this past year, on what happens with the rest of the group, and on what the Cubs do the rest of the offseason. Having Rea in place provides some comfort, but shouldn’t necessarily impact the Cubs’ aggressiveness in trying to add an impact starter or two. Rea will be extremely useful in either case.
