The Alabama women’s tennis team competed in the Roberta Alison Classic, which was hosted on Friday and Saturday at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium.
Freshmen players Mary Sidelnyk, Addison Bowman and Amina Salibayeva all stood out at the tournament. Salibayeva went undefeated throughout the entire tournament. She took her first singles match on Friday in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2, against Michigan State sophomore Carolina Troiano.
During the second round of singles on Friday against East Tennessee State junior Alessandra Caceres, she took the first set 6-2 before running into trouble with Caceres, taking the second set 4-6 and ending her streak of straight sets. Salibayeva finished strong, taking the last set 7-5.
Salibayeva finished the tournament off by defeating MSU junior Chiara Di Genova 6-2 and 6-1.
“We’ve been working on implementing individual goals,” Berhane said. “We’re working every day to get better.”
Bowman and Salibayeva also found success as a doubles pairing during the tournament, winning all three matchups they competed in.
In doubles Round 1, Bowman and Salibayeva defeated Georgia Tech’s Sabritt Dozier and Eleni Karantali 6-0. Bowman and Salibayeva also took home victories in Rounds 2 and 3.
This victory comes in direct contrast to Bowman’s previous doubles pairing with senior partner Maria Andrienko in the Southern Furman Fall Classic, where they dropped all three doubles sets.
Bowman and Salibayeva will advance as a doubles pair to the ITA Sectionals Tournament that will begin Thursday, hosted by LSU.
