The dust has settled on the 2025 NFL trade deadline, and the Chicago Bears made one move, trading for defensive end Joe Tyron-Shoyinka—a move that sent a sixth-round pick to the Cleveland Browns, with Tyron-Shoyinka and a seventh-round selection coming to Chicago.
You might not know much about the Bears’ newest pass rusher, but Ryan Poles told the local media today that he and the coaching staff liked Tyron-Shoyinka’s tape in Tampa Bay, where he spent the first four years of his career after being selected by the Buccaneers at the end of the first round in 2021.
One of the games on that tape was against the Chicago Bears, when he notched two sacks and four tackles in Week 2 of the 2023 season.
“He didn’t get a lot of time in Cleveland, but the tape that you saw, there was a lot of traits to help us both in the run game and the pass game,” Poles said (h/t Jason Lieser). “Loved the effort and the motor, the range that he has… reliable, dependable.”
You can focus on his 31 snaps with Cleveland if you choose, but watching Tyron-Shoyinka (can we just make “JTS” a thing?—we’ll revisit that later) bully Braxton Jones on that tape, and seeing that he had 15 sacks during his time in Tampa, tells me that he can get to the quarterback in a variety of ways. Even if he’s not logging sacks, he’s generating pressure and disruption, which isn’t bad for a rotational pass rush guy.

Ryan Poles Discusses the Joe Tyron-Shoyinka Trade
Poles told reporters today that Tyron-Shoyinka didn’t get much playing time in Cleveland this season because the Browns were comfortable with their depth in front of him on the defensive line. Playing behind names like Myles Garrett, Alex Wright, and Isaiah McGuire, Tyron-Shoyinka registered just 31 snaps with the Browns this season.
“You’re going to have a couple guys that were homegrown there that got ahead of him, and he just didn’t get worked in,” Poles said. “They felt comfortable with their depth.”
As for his role with the Bears, Poles said that Tyron-Shoyinka will play on Sunday against the New York Giants at Soldier Field, and that his role, while still being determined by Ben Johnson and Dennis Allen, could look like Dominique Robinson’s.
Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs (8) is brought down by Cleveland Browns defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka (90) and linebacker Carson Schwesinger (49) during the first half of an NFL football game at Huntington Bank Field, Sept. 21, 2025, in Cleveland, Ohio.As for the lack of “splash,” for the Bears leading up to Tuesday’s deadline, Poles said that the team is focused on the future, and while they made calls to everyone you would expect them to in their search for a pass rush upgrade, there wasn’t an asking price that made sense for them right now.
“We want to sustain for a long period of time,” he said. “We feel like with Joe we can move the needle a little bit and we can continue to get better just through execution, but then also continue to build through the draft so that we can sustain it a lot more rather than throwing [out] money, draft picks — that timeline starts to get shorter and shorter once you get there.”
According to Poles, the team’s priority is to continue building the roster through the draft and allowing Ben Johnson and his staff to develop homegrown talent, rather than spending premium draft capital on more expensive veterans.

Poles said that LB Amen Ogbongbemiga will come off injured reserve this week and will be available Sunday against the Giants. Ogbongbemiga was tied for the team lead in special teams tackles last season, so getting him back this week should go a long way in helping provide some stability to a unit that has been awful this season. Reference the Maxx Crosby (and the like) chatter:Ryan Poles told us that the #Bears did check in on the availability of all the guys we would imagine when he was asked about Maxx Crosby. Ben Johnson noted that Poles turned over every stone. "All I can say is we made calls across the league and I check up on all of the guys…
— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) November 5, 2025 Some insight from Poles on Dayo Odeyingbo:One point Ryan Poles made that's fascinating — they liked Dayo Odeyingbo as a pass-rusher more from DT than DE. They weren't really able to move him there as often as they'd like.
